That is tough. 3 yrs ago I had to put down my dog, which was the first dog I ever owned myself (before him, the dogs I had were the family dog. Not that means much, but there is a different bond you have when you are the one the dog is with the majority of the time). I cried like a baby when his time came. He was 12.

your dog has no fear of death.
Make sure she's not scared and stay with her to the very end.
It's tough for you...but keeping her around in pain is not what you do to your best friend

Take comfort in knowing that you gave her a great life. She knows that too.

Why would you not be there with her. Your face should be the last one she sees.

The Last Battle If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then will you do what must be done, For this -- the last battle -- can't be won. You will be sad I understand, But don't let grief then stay your hand, For on this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship must stand the test. We have had so many happy years, You wouldn't want me to suffer so. When the time comes, please, let me go. Take me to where to my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me till the end And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree It is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do; We've been so close -- we two -- these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Nothing that anyone can say will make it easier.
Dogs are the best.
Dogs are the best.

My dog's lived a good 14 years. An absolutely gorgeous golden retriever.
But she's old. She's deaf, she can barely see, and she can barely walk. She's not even eating anymore.
It was a very tough call... But I decided it's time to put her down.
But ever since we made the call, I've been feeling nothing but guilt. That's only natural right? I love her but I can't stand to see her suffer anymore.
I feel your pain. 14 years seems like a long time, and if they aren't eating, then it's probably time, and that is your dog telling you that. Love on them, make them comfortable, and be with them with the end comes.
Sorry for what you are going through.

Dude, no. You are her fricking world and a stranger's face will be the last one she sees? Bring her in yourself or get a mobile vet to come to your house. It was the hardest thing I've ever done but I held my dog's head in my lap as they gave him the injection.

You made the correct decision imo. It's tough losing a dog, I lost mine this morning. Just a beautiful lab, extremely loyal and playful. But it was her time. We have 2 different cases but putting her down is the way to go. It's hard but at least she won't suffer anymore. That's the way I try look at it. I felt alot of guilt earlier as well but at the end of the day, it was just her time. I feel much better now that she's ok and I don't have to worry about something happening to her anymore.

It's a tough call. We lost one this year, and it was the hardest decision I have had to make. My condolences. I still call her name every now and again.

Get the mobile vet
The last one I put down, I had my vet come to my house. The vet gave me tranquilizers - I gave them to her and she went fast asleep in her bed in her favorite spot next to my bed. She never really woke up when the vet came in for the shot - just flicked her ears a little.
It hurts like hell loosing a dog, but you are doing the right thing.

thats a shitty move man. that dog was by your side for her entire life, and you cant be bothered to be with her when YOU DECIDE you cant watch her suffer?
you owe her more than that.

You really need to be there. I was terrified of that with my dog, but I knew I owed her that. It was peaceful and she was relaxed by my presence and holding her. She was ready, and I would never have forgiven myself had I not been there. You NEED to be with her and frankly, you OWE her that.

I'm putting my 12 year old maltese down tomorrow. She has been a very good companion over the years.

You can get her put down at home if that will make her more relaxed before crossing the rainbow bridge.

Thanks for all the support guys.
I've reconsidered and I'm gonna take her myself. I think that's where the guilt was coming from.
and
The last time we lost a dog, LSU won a title. Fwiw

my nine-year old bloodhound is at the hospital today getting both knees replaced...you dont want to know what this is costing me. without the surgery we would have had to put her down as she could not walk
but she's otherwise healthy and has another couple of years left in her. we do what we have to in exchange for unconditional loyalty
sorry about your girl
sounds like you did the right thing
