The 5.3l AFM is terrible.
Yeah, I only got 215,000 problem-free miles out of one in a Avalanche.

You had a shop do it? Or can do it within the truck?

You can have it reprogrammed to disable the AFM. I love mine.

feels like you're on a Honda Recon 250 stuck in 4th gear going up an incline. If you're in the market for a new Silverado get the 6.2l

Hmmmm, I can go up a hill in my 2500 on the highway, without it needing to downshift from 6th gear. Mine is diesel though, that with the turbo makes for a whole lot of torque that you just can't get from a gasoline engine.

I will absolutely be doing this. No complaints when it's in V8 mode. My frustration is the constant switching back and forth as well as the lag / bogged down feeling in V4 mode

I understand your frustration. I upgraded the intake, added a throttlebody spacer and a performance chip. I get almost 500hp out of it now and 20mpg in the city. I have a 2014 Silverado.

Also make sure to clean your injector valves about every 30k miles. They get clogged unless you run premium all the time. There are youtube videos on how to do it with seafoam spray.

maybe yours needs a software update? i could tell with my 2010 truck (it was barely perceptible) but can't tell at all in new tahoe. if you're still in cpo warranty take it in.

We've had two vehicles with the 5.3. Great motor. Good power, decent MPG, and never any trouble.

Must be user error.

DOD delete baw. Look it up if you don’t like it.

That being said, pops has a 5.3 with active fuel management with like 280k on it and no issues. Sorry you suck at driving.

You can get that mode deleted. Brother in law did it on his Sierra, and it was night and day difference.

My 5.3 doesn’t do any of that.

Mine either, and it's a '17.

Get a Tundra. Last V8 without AFM/DOD or a hyrbid generator (like Ram is putting on all 5.7s in ‘19, which will just be another set of expensive parts to break).

Toyota has endless CAFE credits to burn, so they don’t need to fig-out their trucks with AFM/DOD, low from ends, and plastic catfish air dams, like GM does.

My 2010 had a lifter loose oil pressure among many other things under 36,000 Miles. That truck was the biggest pos I’ve ever owned. My 94 Ford ranger with 140,000 required less shop time.

I love my 5.7 Tundra, but I’ve said before that if Chevy would put that 6.2L in lower model trucks I’d be driving a Chevy. I refuse to pay for a High Country when all I want is the engine. At least with Ford, they’ll put any engine into any trim level.
