the magus by john fowles, best book I've ever read

I was just loosely modeling a relationship on a major one in that book, in something I'm writing. A surreal reading experience. I spent a month on the island on which Magus was based. (Spetses.)

Cain and Abel by Jeffrey Archer

Great book...as are all of his books.

If you are into fantasy, try The Great and Secret Show by Clive Barker. This man is a master story teller and this book is his best IMO.

As far as military, I second Unbroken...also, Lone Survivor is a great read. So much better than the movie.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Did you hear about the musical he wrote that they just found at Yale? It sounds pretty damn funny and nearly finished. I'm praying that someone worth a damn gets a hold of it and actually produces it. It could be amazing if properly done.

Interesting Article about it.

It was the first one I read of his. It's fantastic. What he does to Sailor Boy and the Nun in the Middle East are priceless.

The Caine Mutiny, The Winds of War war and Remembrance - all by Herman Wouk

All three books of The Century Trilogy also Pillars of the Earth and World Without End - Ken Follet

All five of the Song of Ice and Fire series - George RR Martin

That's just a start - all of those books are 750-1200 pagers except for The Caine Mutiny which is about 400 ish.

The Dark Tower
Killing Patton
Count of Monte Cristo
Civil War series Shelby Foote

eta: Killing Patton probably favorite recent read because while historical, reads more like a narrative than anything.

Very cool. I've never been to Greece or that island but feel I know exactly how it would look and feel due to the excellent writing in the book.

ETA: A movie was just released based on his novel Inherent Vice (same name as the movie).

I'm a Tom Robbins fan as well. With your starting point(s) -

December 6 - Martin Cruz Smith
A Soldier of the Great War - Mark Helprin
American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson
