There is a great little hole in the wall, takeout Mexican place w/a drive thru on the corner of Washington & Shepherd called El Rey Taqueria..

I love El Rey. Great coffee, Oj and breakfast tacos. I don't really consider it a hole in the wall compared to other Taqueria's in town.

Sunshine Taqueria on memorial is also very good.

You can pretty much go into any number of Mexican meat markets or gas station and find a good taco.

.. and if you ever need a New Orleans food fix-- BB's Cafe (several locations near you) has pretty authentic gumbo, jambalaya

I hate BB's, i think it is complete arse. Zydeco's is the best cajun/plate lunch place in town.

I've never been, but Houston has an actual New Orleans restaurant:

Brennan's is good. It is the same family but there is a bunch of drama with it and are owned by a different side than the NOLA one. It is the same dining experience than palace cafe minus being on canal.

Ouisie's is another old Houston restaurant that severs similar dishes to old money Charleston/New Orleans southern food.

Zydeco's is plate lunches (fried chicken, smothered pork chops, red beans ect)

Agree about BB's. But I will say it's a good place to have a beer. The one in the Heights is fun and you can spend a great Saturday at Christian's watching the Tigers play.

Here are my food recommendations:

Riehl
Southern Goods
Taqueria Laredo on Washington
El Tiempo for filet fajitas
North
Thai Gourmet (I think that's the name. It's on Richmond and excellent)
Pappa's for a steak
Hungry's - Rice village
Miyako - Sushi
Jinya - Ramen
Pinkerton's - BBQ

Spots to have a drink:

Okra
MacIntyre's
Front Porch & Porch Swing
St. Arnolds
Kirby Ice House
Bad News Bar
Boots & Shoots

Enjoy.

If you want to meet OWLFAN86 in person just visit the gay clubs. You will eventually find him.

Looking to stay inside the loop

I'm from Houston so congrats on that! You'll love it.

Good places to stay are in Midtown/Montrose area. Just depends on how much you're looking to pay a month. Nice places there are around $1200-$1500.

Can stay off of Westheimer down from the galleria area down Fountain View Dr. Its a little outside the loop but that's less traffic you have to worry about...kinda. Rice village is another area but little bit more pricey up there.

They look to have a pretty decent restaurant week lunch deal, so I plan on checking them out to see if the turtle soup stacks up

Found a pretty good happy hour in Citycentre. If traffic jacked up heading back into town, I can just stop off over here.

The General Public

Any drink they have for:
$4 from 4-5pm
$5 from 5-6pm
$6 from 6-7pm

Plus $5 burgers

So I was drinking Redbreast, and it's a 2oz pour. Not bad at all.

And there's too much money in this city

Houston has jobs, that's about all I like about it.

Have lived there twice now for work and leaving it was my favorite part each time.

I love being back in Baton Rouge.

Take her to La Griglia for din din then to Marfreless for a little smoochie smooch (dim lited make out bar).

Get cheap tickets to the Astros then sneak down closer to the field.

Memorial Park for runs or walking the dogs.

You'll find a shite load of running clubs in your area.

Looks like you are settling in nicely! This place is awesome. Ignore the haters. Been here for 11 years now and best decision I made. I'm in the heights area.

Stay away from social junkie across the street from your apartment. Shady AF, especially in Sunday. I'm sure you already figured that out by now though!

Seems like half of Houston is from Louisiana. There is a reason 10% of all Louisiana born residents move to Houston.

I keep emphasizing to Louisiana folks contemplating moving to Houston. Don't be afraid of good schools and money constantly poured into the school system. Don't get terrified when you see steel beams being erected on roadways, it's called progress and investing in infrastructure.

I think that place is permanently closed down now. LINK
