quote:
I was pulling into the grocery store right when they announced it about an hour ago.
As luck would have it a guy with several Notre Dame stickers on his Lexus SUV pulled in next to me.
I said "Notre Dame fan huh?"
He said "Yeah"..
I said "Lou Holtz just died". and kept walking.
The look on his face. was priceless. You would have thought I kicked his dog.
It made my day.
Wow, what a total badass

I was 17 when I attended Lou Holtz’s football camp at William & Mary. I remember he spoke to the campers on a Sunday night and had all the right “sayings” to get us jacked up for camp. After a week of camp one of his staff called me regularly to recruit me to play for William & Mary. I liked Holtz and his staff. He actually made W& M a competitive football team. I had always wanted to come to LSU and found myself conflicted between coming to LSU or playing for Holtz. Before I had to decide Holtz took the coaching job at NC State. I wasn’t a Wolfpack fan and decided to come to LSU like I planned in the first place. At the time didn’t realize what path Holtz would take in his coaching career. Seems like yesterday.

Did he ever pick up the Auburn helmet he knocked on the floor, accusing them of things he couldn’t prove, polish it off and apologize?
No?
Sorry if I missed that.

I remember Holtz mostly for pulling off key upsets:
1978 Orange Bowl vs. Oklahoma
1988 vs. Miami
1992 Sugar Bowl vs. Florida
1993 vs. FSU
I was a walk-on at Bama when we played South Carolina in 2000 at BDS. One of only three games we won that year after being preseason #3 and defending SEC champs. I remember seeing him walk out of the tunnel while I was warming up to go over and stand on the sideline.
