If you actually speak to a River Boat pilot in person and know them they will laugh about how much they get paid. They know it's completely outrageous.

I read every word of this stupid shite.
Are you expecting the Louisiana river pilot to have my respect after that? Cause they still don’t and the entire industry can go frick itself.

Sorry. Use of “m” is a finance term for thousands vs “k” for thousands.
OP so touchy. Secret down votes, paid lobbyists cruising websites and the grammar police.

So it’s basically an over educated plant operator of the river. Got it.

Yes, they get paid about 650,000 as I said before but they are considered independent contractors and thus have to pay about half of that back in taxes.
How is this different than anyone else? You act like are giving a talk about your job at a middle school

They last time a ship caused major damage in the river was when a ship that completely lost steering hit they warehouses near the river walk.
Which was the River Pilot's fault.
I think the ship captain actually tried to take control back from the pilot.
Unless Engineering Disasters and OSHA were wrong.

A lot of envy in this thread.

There's not a lot of envy.
there's just a lot less sympathy.
This a-hole OP literally bitched that he needs to be given sympathy because he has to tip his driver.
WTF?
And again...if the taxpayers of the state of Louisiana are not the ones who pay them, then why are they preaching to us about getting a payraise? the frick does that have to do with us?
and then he titled this in a very condescending way.
River Pilots can frick off. there's no sympathy to be had here.
If your driver is too expensive, start getting Ubers.

I know several miss river bar pilots well and NONE of them event attempted to get a degree from anywhere or a maritime academy. At about 21 years of age they went off to sea for about a year to rack up the sea time and came back to take the USCG test which isn’t that hard. They then went through the apprenticeship and got voted in because they were all related.

I guarantee not one river pilot in Louisiana has a 50% effective tax rate.

They just pay family members and other pilots to drive them. It is all just a racket.
He should have said it like this “then they have to tip their kids $4,000 to drive them.” “Then they have to tip other pilots to take them to boats”

facts are that River Pilots job isn't a "joke"
facts are also that 95% of anyone with a high school level education could be trained to do their job.
basically if you have any sense whatsoever you can learn how to do this.

All three state pilot assoc’s (Bar, Crescent, NOBRA) require a college degree. It’s been that way since ab 2008. Now Crescent is the only of the three that doesn’t require the degree to be from a maritime academy but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. It’s been a grandfathering in process where if you were in before the rules were in place you didn’t need the degree. For those saying they know pilots that don’t have a degree, they got in before.
The buy in is called “hog money”. It’s whatever the target salary for the association is at the time. It’s then distributed among all the partners in the assoc.
All the associations have different apprentice program requirements for licences. None require an unlimited masters of oceans license lol. 2nd mate (Bar), 3rd mate (NOBRA), 1600 master (Crescent) is what’s required.

Conversely there was another situation when a Chinese vessel collided with the I-210 Bridge Structure over the Calcasieu Ship Channel.
The captain of the ship did not want to give control to the river pilot. He was not allowed to return to China until his government paid for the bridge damages.
Very poor career decision for Capt. We Solo.

I don't think that it has been mentioned but former LSU football player and member of the 2007 National Championship team, Ryan Miller has progress toward becoming a captain.
After graduating from LSU he entered the Texas A & M Maritime Academy. Upon my understanding he is a First Mate and makes his home in Corpus Christi.
His father recently retired with the Calcasieu Pilots and his uncle is a Captain with the Sabine Pilots Association operating out Beaumont, TX.
Three ancestors operated schooners from Moss Lake that mostly transported short-leaf pine to Texas and returned with cotton but sailed over the entire Gulf Coast.

doesn’t that help in just about any industry. Doctors, lawyers and such
The fact that you are saying this should tell you how unfair and corrupt your organisation is.
You are not prevented from being a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer from an organization. There is no union that stops you from being a doctor after you graduated. You can start your own practice.

Many many doctors and lawyers take over family firms and clinics over the years
Same with car dealerships
You do realize that you’re talking about family OWNED businesses right? I know pilots think their in a family owned business but it’s not, not even close.
I’ll hand it to the retired pilots, they did an excellent job manipulating the system and have worked over all the local politicians with their well funded and sharp lobbyists. Look at Nungesser, he’d bend over and take it no matter what their request is. Politicians don’t bite the hand that feeds them.
