This happens to me. They get in my attic and eat wires. But I think it’s squirrels.

Cats and dogs get along better than their reputation suggest. Especially, if the yapping dogs are inside and the killer cats are outside.
So, get a cat.

I'd get some kid/pet proof rat boxes OP. Put your standard snap traps in them baited with the stuff you buy at the store. I don't recommend peanut butter as the ants will get into it. But peanut butter is the best if you have a problem you can use it. Place them just like you see in commercial buildings with the holes along the walls of your house next to your pool equipment.
Poison is the easiest to keep in them and lasts, but if you have pets or kids I don't like to use it. Your dog could eat a dead rat killed by poison and it could kill or seriously hurt your dog.

I've had success with those drop floor buckets. Fill it halfway with water and put a top on it with drop floor tack a snickers or smear peanut butter to lid. When they climb ontop it drops them into bucket of water. I've caught 4 field rats in one night before.
If you don't have Cats you can poison them too. But if you do have cats don't use poison because then the cats eat dead rats and die too. Lessons learned.

Squirrels just a rat with a bushy tail.
As to using poison, I’m told if the poison doesn’t metabolize in the target animal, it shouldn’t affect your pets if they consume that target animal. You can always ask the seller or read the label. I’ve used a lot of poison around my barn and home and never had a problem. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

There are videos on YouTube-Mousetrap Monday where he tested various things as mouse ,rat repellants.
Peppermint oil was the best.Paid no attention to mothballs, actually would take bites out Irish Spring soap.
I have some plastic bottles, stuffed with cotton balls and saturated with peppermint oil I ordered from Amazon.Put them under hood of cars, tractors.Has worked well for me.Drill a few holes in plastic bottles.
My neighbor swears by bobcat urine used for trapping.Put it in spray bottles and sprays it on tires of truck, tractors.

Bait the snap traps with chewed up tootsie roll. It sticks to the trap so the little bastards have to pull not lick to get it off.

It's a huge issue with newer cars. Fuel lines and wiring harnesses specifically.

Leave it to our government. Probably in with car builders. Money money money.
