Louisiana is less socialist than it was in the late 19th and early 20th century. Winn Parish had a newspaper called the Weekly Comrade, and elected a socialist mayor and state senator. The Socialist candidate in the 1912 presidential election garnered 40% of the vote in Washington Parish.

Long at least made it so the common man got a few crumbs: schools for his children, hospitals when he was sick, roads and bridges to take his crops to market.

Who built the highway to Baton Rouge? Who put up the hospital

Who looks after shite-kickers like you?
The Kingfish do!
Randy Newman agrees.

Can’t believe no mention of Leander Perez yet.
He had as much to do with the corruption in this state, if not more, than any of the Long’s did.
All that local history from that era is both fascinating & depressing to me. Especially Perez. He sort of flys under the radar as far as pieces of shite that sold this state down the river, goes. People all wanna shove it on Long but i would argue him & his buddies were the ones who ultimately held full swing over Long & LA’s greatest natural resources during such a pivotal era.

Carl Weiss is not to be confused with the unrelated Seymour "steal-more" Weiss who was HPL's main man and enabler at the Roosevelt Hotel in Nola. My grandparents told stories about him, and not good ones.

I can see some similarities in Long and Trump.
Other than Trump being born into wealth in New York and Long being born into somewhat humble conditions (not as humble as he claimed apparently) there is some crosstalk in their rhetoric, The difference of course is that Long was serious about his socialist leanings while Trump is merely paying lip service to those who would benefit the most from Long's ideology.
Long is largely responsible for the New Deal. Long was highly critical of Roosevelt and the New Deal for its conservatism but his ideology was a major driving force behind the old guard's reluctantly doing anything which benefitted the average American. Roosevelt is viewed as a benevolent ruler. Without Roosevelt personally witnessing the abject poverty in and around Warm Springs, Georgia and Huey Long's pressure the New Deal never happens. There was nothing benevolent about it, Roosevelt saw the poverty in Georgia, heard the rhetoric from Baton Rouge and knew what had recently happened in Russia. Roosevelt ran to his cronies and convinced them if they did toss the masses a bone they would not have a bone to toss. They reluctantly agreed, as long as the bone was tiny with no meat on it, and it lead to an explosion in the American middle class that the aristocracy has been attacking since.

Source: I still have my notes from the GOAT LSU history professor, Mark Carleton.
Winn Parish was also strongly in favor of the Union during the run up to secession.

Boy, how the rich hated that man
Yet Huey's descendants are very wealthy due to his corruption and thievery. Go figure...

Also, that our state government is so over bloated much of it with ne'er do well relatives of elected officials.
You can thank Huey for a lot of the antiquated boards and commission he created to circumvent local governments.

Jeff Landry meanwhile is just all about putting his cronies in power.
IOW, just like Huey Long.
