I wish we could see you writing that you are spending every waking moment becoming more fluent in the languages you NEED to navigate that part of the world on your own.
Once you can be identified as a (rich) foreigner, they'll expect you to share your riches.

You need to go there and find out yourself. The worse that could happen is you don't get further than Poland. That's still closer to your goal than staying on this side of the lake and hoping.

You getting to them is a fantasy. Them getting to you in Poland, maybe. But are you willing to risk telling them to get on the roads across the entire country? Very risky
That is probably my reality.

Here’s an inspirational story from WLOX about a mother and child who made it from Odessa to the U.S. with the help of Rep. Palazzo.

I think you trying to get to them in Ukraine is a very risky idea. The best course of action would be for them to wait until it is safe to get out of Ukraine. Only your wife can tell when conditions are safe for that to happen. Then call your congressman to help get them from that place to the U.S. That’s a mission a congressman would love to facilitate because it makes him look good and could translate into votes. Helping a precious American baby and her mom and brother get to safety is political gold.

Well said and helpful. Thank you

If they can stay and are relatively safe, tell them to stay.
There's conflicting statistics, but many MANY women are sexually assaulted during flight from war.
Most.
Her son will be at risk too for the same.
Food & transportation cost, and cash money is not always accepted for payment. Tell them to stay.
As an American you are unlikely to get to them via Poland or other countries. I feel for you.

Sadly there are already sex traffickers on the Polish borders looking for victims. That is some sick and disgusting human beings.

Truly vile. At least you and your wife are aware that such things are going on so as not to fall victim to their tactics.

US will share in the responsibility for caring for the refugees fleeing #Ukraine, says
@POTUS
.
Might want to start bombarding your senator asking to help get your family out.

Unfortunately right now, America sharing in the responsibility for the refugees means sending funds and aid to the countries taking them in.
Israel talked about letting some refugees in that have family connections in Israel. The difference being that the family will provide for them financially, not the government. I'm hoping America does something similar.

UPDATE:
I was only able to speak with my wife briefly because the connection was very poor. Her friend and neighbor at the apartment Luda, daughter and Husband have been sleeping in our apartment at night. Their apartment is on the fifth floor, which is the top floor, ours is on the second floor. They are without electricity, internet and water but have gas for heat and cooking.
Them staying in our apartment at night is probably wise. My wife told me today that a school and the top floor of an apartment next to the school were destroyed by bombing last night. The school is where my wife went as a child about 2 miles from her parents house.
They are not getting any reports of civilian deaths in her city but I assume there are some, especially at that apartment complex I just mentioned.
I heard on the news this morning, a reporter describing his exit from Kiev yesterday. He said it was roadblock after roadblock and that was for people leaving.

I just read an interesting article about Zelensky's thoughts on negotiations. He sounds open to not joining NATO that doesn't want Ukraine anyway and open to discussing Luhansk and Donetsk independence. I think there is a possibility for them to end this.

Saw that. Also saw, that Kyiv has between 1.5-2 weeks of supplies left. I'm sure he doesn't want to wait until next week to start giving concessions.

Do you think she can get to western Ukraine?

No. Really the safest thing for her to do is stay put. They are not hearing of civilian deaths in Lisichansk, but I'm sure there are some. If the Ukrainian army wouldn't have moved into her city there probably wouldn't even be shelling. The Ukrainian army have been camped in abandoned factories and possibly schools if Russia is bombing the schools. The civilian population in her city is not fighting against the Russians for the most part, so they are not a target. Thankfully the Ukrainian army is not camping in civilian homes and Russia is not targeting civilians where she is.
Unfortunately, if you have an apartment next to where the Ukrainian army is, you might want to consider sleeping somewhere else. The apartments that she has heard of being bombed are the one next to the school and one next to a factory with Ukrainian soldiers. I posted a photograph earlier of an empty field where an apartment complex used to be, but was burned down in the bombings in 2014. Across the street are where Ukrainian soldiers are camped now. The apartments in the background of that photo were bombed this week, where her friend lives.
It is so hard to predict how this war is going to play out. It could end tomorrow, it could go on for months. They could accidently blow up one of those nuclear reactors. My wife was there when Chernobyl blew up in 86, she was about 5 at the time. It could turn out to be WWIII. It could be occupied by Russia with guerilla warfare for years. Who really knows what will happen. What my wife is thinking at this point, is that once the bombings stop it will be safe for her and she won't have to leave. Unless they start talking about drafting her son into the army.
The situation is very fluid right now, so we will have to adapt to what we are handed as it comes.
I personally think it is very telling that Putin has been willing to negotiate before taking Kiev. Certainly his negotiating strength would be greater after he takes Kiev, so if he is willing to negotiate from a place of weakness, so to say, that has to say something. I think Putin knows he made a mistake at this point. Give Putin some concessions so he can save a little face and end this.

UPDATE 3/10/22
I spoke to the wife briefly. The wife and baby have the flu. Our connection was bad, so it was difficult for me to talk to her. She did tell me that people were running out of food and evacuating out of her city by bus. I asked her if she will try to join them. She told me that she was sick and didn't want to leave her son. I think she is still holding out hope that the bombing will end soon.
She spoke to her cousin Anna and Kharkiv. Anna told her that there is looting taking place, included the houses and apartments of those that evacuated.
That is sad to hear, but not surprising. I would see people digging through the dumpster every day by my apartment, including old ladies. Keep in mind that they don't flush their toilet paper, so there is used toilet paper in those dumpsters. I felt safe in Ukraine, but theft has always been an issue there. The government is unable to support the poor there.

It's just going to get worse. That's the reality of it. Looking at the current status on the map looks like her chances of leaving are slimming down. Wouldn't it be better for them to at least head west while they have a chance. Sorry but I just think your wife is in complete denial. I don't think Russians will be allowing people to leave areas they have control over; especially people in the medical field.
