Spent 13 hrs in jail there once. Something about drunk and disorderly. That's all I got.

The little downtown area was nice until I got hassled for money by some gangsta

This isn’t true. I have frequented downtown for the past 20 years at least once a week and this has never happened to me even a single time.

Also there are three Chick-Fil-A locations. The real ones know.

Spent 4 years there in the late 2000s. Absolutely loved it.

There are a couple "sketchy" spots, but they are easily avoidable. They have a a couple of nice neighborhoods/areas but if you're looking for a big, new construction, you'll have to venture out some. If I bought a house in Hammond it would be in the neighborhood between downtown and the campus. Older houses with some size that aren't break the bank expensive.

Restaurant and downtown scene is really good. Have basically every type of restaurant you'd want and they are all really good. Bar scene is geared towards college kids, obviously.

Proximity to SLU is nice if you are a fan. You can get tickets to season tickets to basically any sport for next to nothing. It's easy to stop by and catch a few innings here and there. We went to the football game a couple of weeks ago and parked 300 yards from the field without any traffic issues. And the sports are all pretty good for the level and some are really good.

It's a small town. You can get from one side to the other relatively easy, as opposed to Baton Rouge and/or New Orleans. It has a real small town feel, too. But it's growing to where it's got larger town amenities.

The schools are part of the reason I don't currently live there. They have Holy Ghost and STA if you're catholic and are fine paying for school. The lab school is a pretty decent elementary school. But it doesn't have the options that BR has in terms of private options and the public options aren't as good as LP, AP or St. Tammany.

The other downside is also a positive. It's close to Covington, BR and NOLA, but it isn't super close like a true suburb. It's slightly too far to comfortably live there if you are commuting constantly to BR or NOLA for work/life events. If you were WFH or didn't have to make the drive 5 days a week, it wouldn't be terrible.

Golf- Oak Knoll isn't a bad little course, but it isn't great. Carter is nice, but it's open to the public. So it's missing the high end private country club that NOLA and BR have. But that's a first world problem and only if you're a golfer.

The shopping has gotten infinitely better in the last 15 years. The old mall, which was rundown, was expanded. They have a bunch of new stores, and Academy, Target, etc.

I feel 10x safer walking around Hammond than in Baton Rouge and NOLA. Never had an issue where I felt unsafe.

I'd say this is a pretty spot on review

I was thinking this same thing. I go there all the time and have never seen anything remotely like this. You will more likely hear "How ya doing?" or even be asked if you need any help. Downtown Hammond is solid and the main police station is 2 blocks from the center of town.

Not a fan of Mariner's (used to be like Port of Call...not any more). Love the Crescent for late drinks...great older crowd. Nice people. Tacos and beer is the bomb! Great Margaritas. Kirin is also great. Brady's a good place to drink...not wild about the food.

I've never understood the love of Trey Yuen. Awful food IMHO. Really bad and overpriced. However, China Lotus is fantastic.

Have lived in the area my whole life. It’s a little hidden gem. Lots of the replies are spot on. Good food, good people, friendly and slow-moving for the most part. Downtown is great, and the Downtown Development District will keep it that way, and keeps upgrading. SLU is underrated and you can park and walk to anything easily. Great neighborhoods downtown and right out of town near the airport. Good sports to watch and lots of activities for the whole family.
There’s a mayoral election this year so hopefully nothing crazy happens. The incumbent has done a pretty good job for the most part, but lots of opponents so hoping the vote doesn’t get split too much.

All this is true!
We live in downtown and we had 7 potted plants stolen last week from the sidewalk but that’s the worst that’s happened. Also, Hammond has almost every store you could need and can get across town in ten mins even during the busier part of the day

I like Real Deal on Veterans. Had lunch there when I was in Hammond for business.

We live in downtown too. That’s disappointing to hear… I’ve left lawn mowers and bikes under my carport many of times and never had an issue even with living on a main cut through street. We LOVE the downtown area.

Another plus is being able to take a golf cart to pretty much anywhere downtown or any SLU event.
