Why are you ragging on Texas? Seems the state stepped up and shut down an abusive TABC. That's more than Louisiana would do.
If you acknowledge that corrupt and overbearing officials are everywhere, you should praise Texas for reigning them in.

Damn. I don't live in Texas and don't have a dog in that fight, but that article pissed me off. Good for Spec's for fighting that b.s. What a waste

quote:

Amid a controversy over travel to fancy resorts and other spending controversies, the head of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Sherry Cook, announced she was stepping down from her job effective May 23.

For more than three hours, top TABC officials were grilled by House members for misusing state resources, taking trips to Hawaii on the taxpayers’ dime, mixing vacation with state duties, misreporting who has been assigned which state-owned vehicles, and cozying up to the very industry they’re supposed to be regulating.

Sounds like the BR COA

The Specs by my house use to be an Academy. They filled that entire damn store too.

Times I've wanted liquor, I go to specs anyway because of the huge selection.

That's the one thing I missed about moving back to LA from TX.

While it's far more convenient to buy the basics, they just don't have near the selection in even the stores that specialize in beverages.

And you are attempting to equate that with the stories of fraud/corruption that came out of BR/ NOLA in the past year

What fraud or corruption came out of NOLA in the past year?

on I-45? One of the few advantages Louisiana has over Texas is better alcohol buying laws.

The truth is, the vast majority of all governments throughout the ages have tended to be overbearing in one area or another. Some tend to lean on the economic stuff, some tend to lean on the social stuff. But you rarely see a across the board hands off approach.

The judges poured out the TABC like stale beer in a blunt 151-page ruling. The judges said TABC failed to prove dozens of allegations, rebuked agency lawyers for failing to disclose evidence to their own witness (and the court) and called out the agency for “stacking” charges, a tactic commonly used to pressure defendants into a settlement.
sounds like the system worked

I really only drink beer and wine so don't really effect me and I like going to spec or total wine. It is super nice to be able to get flask in gas station for sporting event though.

But The 12am Sunday law is retarded. Always kills me on Sunday mornings when I am buying stuff to cook for week and/or Sunday night

Specs is awesome. But now I moved right next to a "Total Wine & More" and it is pretty nice too.

the multi-year prosecution and an eight-day March administrative law hearing — similar to a trial — turned up evidence that Spec’s may have paid a $778 invoice from a wine supplier a day or two late in 2011

I know of a local club that bounced a $10,000 check to a distributor here in BR. ABC yanked it's license on a Tuesday, but due to the political influence of one of the owners, they were back up and running that Thursday night. No word on whether or not the check was ever made good on.

The fact that the TABC went after Specs shows how fricked up it is. Specs is massive here in Texas. They only found a day late payment on one invoice for under a thousand dollars? All those stores and that's all that is found?

Why even look? What's the motivation? Especially to go this far when a fine would be sufficient. Corruption and bitterness I guess. Gotta get bitter when all you do is bust kids and write tickets to bar owners.

My guess is top TABC officials were being courted by out of state retailers and being influenced to put heat on specs to ease their entry to market.

Looks like someone in the TABC was on a religious crusade.

quote:

According to court documents, the TABC said denying the new permits was justified because Spec’s threatened the “general welfare, health, peace, morals and safety” of Texans due to the concerns raised in the agency’s probe.

Not sure about the TABC officials but Specs is the best thing ever for my General Welfare, peace and morals.

Which is absolutely insane. Chain liquor stores have to run a tight ship here. They aren't allowed to go public either
