re: State Schools vs. Ivy League

I hope my son and future children can make it to an ivy league school. But the environment that i grew up i , never prepared me to think about applying to more than a state school. I'm not the smartest person in the world, but smart enough to know there are plenty of people with brains who don't get the opportunity to go to those schools. When it comes to the real world, it doesn't always matter. I've gone up against engineering students from georgia tech, Stanford, etc. And my LSU degree held its own.

that and the environment that you grew up in, I work with a lot of people that have hoity toity degrees and although it never comes up, we work together just fine, although I must admit, they all work for me

Exactly. I want my kids to be able to learn more than I did. And there's no doubt that an ivy league school will provide that more than a state school. But if a state school is all they can get into, or god forbid all i can afford, then I'm still pretty comfortable with their financial security.

I actually think there are harder schools to get into than Princeton. Great school, but i knew at least one guy who got a little attention from them and he was fuc**ng retarded. Happened to have family in jersey, so he got attention. That should not be enough to get you into a top 3 school
Princeton is known as the "Southern" Ivy League school.

they'll do just fine, and it will be because of their upbringing, I was proudly about 10 years into my career before I ever realized that LSU was considered such an inferior school! I thought I was on top of the world! and my employer was pretty happy with my work too

Ivy League schools get you in some pretty powerful niches, but the HYP people who get these positions at hedge funds etc are the top of the top and not an average student there. Or have insane connections.

i turned down ivy to go to LSU, which is a likely repeated theme by teh OT's finest
With the same monetary concerns? I love the OT.

You're insane if you turn down the chance to go to an Ivy. A state school like Michigan or Texas makes the choice a little harder, but not much. Regardless of whether you think they're overrated, that name opens doors.
If you have a stack of resumes on the desk, and one of them has Harvard or Princeton on it, you're going to look at it first.

Knew a guy that went to Columbia. Biggest douche bag I've ever met. Constantly talks about Columbia and how he's so much better than anyone else because he went Ivy.

For my degree (engineering) I'd rather go to (obviously)LSU than cloumbia or NYC or some school like that. But i grew up in an artistic family (dad taught art), so i would have loved to go to one of those schools
but looking back there is really only one school i would have rather gone to for my degree. And that is Stanford. I wish i wod have had the foresight as a freshman to shoot for that.

Nope. TOPS to LSU versus the same type of offer made from a place like Harvard, Yale or Stanford makes me laugh. Why wouldn't a person take that? Insecurities is the only answer. If you are able to compete with the best, why not take the chance?

Our CEO went to Stanford. Elite universities are the modern day equivalent of the good ole boys network. The reason you go to those schools isn't so much for what you learn, but who you can connect with.

I can assure, with zero evidence to back, that 90% of students at Harvard aren't graduating with straight A's. That's just ludicrous.
