We messed up and got a shelter dog last time. Never again. Just bite the bullet and buy a good one.

It sounds like the dog dodged the bullet of shitty owners.

We have had five pure bred dogs and the best dog we have ever had is a mutt my son scooped up at his bus stop when she was a puppy. Well mannered, loyal as hell and never, ever sick for fourteen years.

PS she recently had a stroke as I mentioned in the other thread but that is it for all of those years.

Again, a couple thousand isn't over 5k. Had to do a twisted a omach a couple of years ago, brought dog in the middle of the night and had to drive to LSU. They kept the dog and performed the surgery the next day. Kept the dog for observation and even that was less than 3k. 5k is an absurd number for almost any one ailment. Now maybe something that takes time like cancer treatments but you aren't paying those out of pocket in one visit but over time.

If you live out in the country in Northeast Arkansas just leave the door open and you will have a new dog pretty soon afterwards.

I've had a few pure-bred dogs; a boxer, a cocker spaniel, a collie. They were all good dogs. But the best dog I ever had was a mutt. He was my constant companion for 13 years. Either in the house, or in our yard wherever I went he followed me. He sat with me when I worked at home on the computer. I swear that dog could read my mind. I cried like a baby when he died.

Just got a cattle dog pup from a farmer in SWLA for $200 a couple months ago.

Pretty much what I did 13 years ago.

I wanted a blue heeler pup and just waited until I found an ad on Facebook/Craigslist/Classifieds. Drove to Wiggins, MS to get her and was only $150 (no papers), but pure bred. Best $150 I've spent and dog still going strong, despite slowing down a little bit.

Now this story could have been a complete fabrication, but the owners said the litter was a result of an accidental pregnancy between two of their heelers. We drove out there a few weeks before taking pup home and everything seemed normal out there. One of the "legit" heeler breeders in the area at the time was selling pups for way more than $150 at the time for their award winning heelers with papers, and that breeder later went on to get busted for being a puppy mill, so glad we didn't go with them.
