That's great if your an engineer or a lawyer or consultant or something where you can just push through your current project until it's done and then cruise while waiting for the next. 99.9999999999% of jobs do not and cannot and will never allow that flexibility.
You covered a lot of positions and then said 99.999999% so something isn't working.
A lot of corporate gigs are still project and/or task based activities. If you want to do it at 2 AM or 9 AM on Monday morning really shouldn't matter...as long as it is done.
In service industries like retail and QSR, you are correct that there is no way around it. Instead, those jobs will become more automated over time.
In a nutshell, any kind of manual labor or labor that involves a repeated task with short time intervals between the repeats cannot do the 'flex' model that I mentioned.

Quality of life to me refers to material availability and the purchasing power of individuals. The average Swede may have some nice government-provided amenities but they do not have anywhere approaching the purchasing power of an average American.

Which utopia do you choose?
In Country A you can buy any car you want. Junker, muscle car, smartcar, a fricking 18-wheeler if you want. Some people can't afford the nice ones, some people can only afford the junker. But if you're smart and work hard, one day you can get the one you dream of. And it's your choice.
In Country B there is only one car. Every citizen is given this car. Now, it is a very nice, efficient, reliable car. It's safe and cozy. But it doesn't matter who you are or what you do, this is the car you get. And a chunk of your wages are taken every week so everyone can have this nice, comfortable car.
----
If this generation has decided Country B is the better utopia, America is over.

Being available close to 7 days a week, but going away from the standard 8 hr work week. Personally, I love it
Yep, nothing better than the knowledge that the blackberry can buzz at any time, any day of the week, without warning and you get to drop whatever you're doing and get to work. Truly we live in an age of marvels.

My dad worked in a typical office back in the 80's. I did summers there painting, maintenance and such.
Times were so much different then. You went home from the office and didn't worry about emails, texts, etc. They read the sports page during slow times instead of TD.com. And lots more people smoked at the office so hourly breaks were common.
Anecdotally, I agree that Americans aren't as efficient at work compared to japanese or euros.

This is where organizational culture is key. As long as people are respectful of weekends unless SHTF, then you don't run into the issue.
I have no issue checking email and logging an hour of work on a Saturday as a tradeoff.

Work hard, so you can buy cool shite, that you won't get to enjoy because you work too much. If this is the American dream, I don't get it

They should work 12's for a while. 8 hours a day aint shite.

They're both ideals. Neither are true

And the problem with the US now is we arent really Capitalist anymore. We are a half assed capitalist country mixed with some socialism.

Moreover, lawyers and consultants would get screwed the most in such a model. Unlike most of the working world, lawyers/consultants/executives/whatever don't see their day end at 5 or 6 or even 7.
I love my job, which is pretty flexible, but I leave at 7ish, and work at home. I get emails at night and respond. I work on weekends already. I'm sure other professions are the same way. A "flexible model" would just be code for me having less of my life segregated from work.

Hell, we dont "work" 6 hrs here as it is.... unless your job entails posting on TD....
I would imagine american worker productivity is far less then 6 hrs with cell phones and internet usage...

I can make socialistic policies work too, if you give me a society of educated, well-to-do folks who all look alike and are perfectly fine living in a country that has little significance to the broader world.

Never been to Europe huh?

That is complete horseshite
Sweden is a rich country and has all the luxuries we do. Hell, look at all Scandinavian countries. your argument for us working so hard is complete crap. We work harder, and MOST people are still worse off.
