Sorry if I used the incorrect banking terminology. By overdraft protection I meant it won't let you overdraft the account.
Not a problem, I see now what you were saying. Yes, the reason why we chose Chase was because the banker pulled me to the side and said they have overdraft PREVENTION for Fizzy Pop Jr's high school checking acct. That's what sold me, but junior still thinks he cannot go below the low-balance alert we set at $50 for him. All about a teaching moment, I'm glad the banker didn't let him know there's a prevention safety net.

Yes, through my local credit union (LA Capitol). No checks, just a debit card.

We use Greenlight cards. I like it. Can see everything. Instant transfers when needed from parent account. Not sure they need more than that for a while

My dad opened mine at chase bank one in college when I was 17 and he put an amount that had to last 3 months.
His technique to keep me from blowing it and spreading it out.
FEAR.

And every checking account has the ability to turn this off. This isn’t a cool feature for teen checking accounts

son opened an account at a local credit union when he turned 16 and got a job. No attachments to me or his mother. It's his own account. As the teller at the bank said, he's a young man and he needs to take care of this on his own. More specifically, when she started asking him questions for his account application I started answering for him and she politely told me to go to waiting area and let the young man take care of himself.
Which is how it should be. I bet the same posters on here who set their kid up with a "teen checking account " also complain about how the young generation is so screwed up and disconnected from reality etc
