re: Tell me about life in Covington

This thread has delved into a shite show. Covington is a cool town and a good place to raise a family. Mandeville schools are much better but parts of Covington are zoned for Mandeville. My kids graduated from Fontainebleau and are at LSU. It is a sleepy suburb that has been strangled by poor growth management. The west 30's is the ghetto area on the north side of Covington. Lee Road is the white trash area. The south side of Old Covington is very nice. New areas are sprouting up on the southwest part.
Now that the kids have gone off to LSU, I will probably sell and go Uptown or Mid-City by City Park. I didn't want to chance the charter school lottery nor pay 8-10k per kid per year on top of higher property taxes and insurance. Pros and cons to both areas.
I agree with those that commented on the people being closed minded. I feel that way about Louisiana in general. The state has the highest percentage of native residents. Most of my friends are transplants from other states. The growth of Chevron and other large companies are bringing in new educated residents to the area.

oh damn. You better pack your stuff up and move out to a place with more culture. I hear Metairie has plenty of apartments to rent.

You can say that again.
Seriously, I will say it again. The Covington/Mandeville area are one of the best suburb area of the state.
I would strongly consider living in one of the old house or fixed up cottages near old town Covington.

I guess it is because I grew up in the area, but I have no idea what yall are talking about when you say the people are stand-offish. I don't want to sound like a dick, but maybe you need to look in the mirror. Maybe your just not that interesting or outgoing?
All of my friends grew up and moved all over the state and country. We haven't ever had trouble making new friends or hanging out with new, fun people. I can always find stuff to do, but those are the things that made the area popular(outdoor activities). You're definitely not gonna meet people eating at a restaurant or at the movies. I don't expect random people, except black chicks because they love me for some reason, to just come up to me and start a conversation. Out of the people I grew up with, I'd say we are the most outgoing and friendly people I have met around the state.
The people who never left do suck(even the ones I am friends with), but you can easily pick them out when they wait on you at a restaurant or bar. I'd say that out of the people who went to college, 1/3 came back to STP, 1/3 now live in New Orleans/Metairie, and the other 3rd have moved all over. I went to SPS and MHS, but hung out with people from all over western St Tammany growing up, from the brokest white trash rednecks to some of the wealthiest people in the state. I do understand that some people are gonna be shitty, but just can't see it as a generalization for the entirety of Covington.
*I do live in Metairie now because of the proximity to UNO and I don't want to pay high taxes for shitty services in New Orleans. If I had my choice, I'd live in Madisonville

I've been on the Northshore for almost 7 years now, and I have never felt like neighbors didn't want me here. Everybody I talk to is very welcoming at schools, church, etc. I like the fact I got more house/grass/trees for my money here than I could have on the Southshore. I have several people from work that have moved here from out of state, and not one of them has a bad thing to say about the area and have all been welcomed in their neighborhoods with no issues.
I have run into people that feel the same way as some of you...that the people aren't very accepting, but those people seem to be the ones that feel they were forced to move here after Katrina or for some other reason.
These threads always turn into pissing contests, but it's dumb to argue about it...different strokes for different folks.

If anything, Metairie people are stand-offish. I used to get so pissed off when I'd wave to someone and they'd just turn around and act like they didn't see me. I couldn't ever think of asking someone here to watch my house or pick up my mail. After Katrina on the Northshore, I must've had 20 of my parent's neighbors and my friends ask me to check on their houses, take care of critical problems, etc and I never asked for anything in return. I grew up bringing food to my grandparents friends and cutting their grass for free. On the Northshore, people are actually friendly

I lived in Mandeville for a year and thought the folks were pretty nice
Posted on 9/3/14 at 6:49 pm to biglego
My grandparents retired to Mandeville around '89,
I've been over there all my life. Much nicer back then. But still a place I would raise kids.

So many people in mandeville now. Became the cool place to be especially after Katrina

I definitely agree on "friendly". I stand by the "closed minded" remark. As a point of reference I have lived in South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Indiana and Germany.
I find the Northshore locals very friendly but the natives have deep roots with family and friends and it takes a lot more work to break into those small circles.

That's exactly it. They're not rude or ugly in any way. Just not very welcoming into the inner circles of friends. My SO grew up here, and he said the same things. He doesn't see it either. But, everyone of the friends I have made here (again, all transplants like myself) have said the same. It's very hard to make real friends here. I have met a ton of nice acquaintances, but they don't open up easily. And that's all they are.

Also, my SO went to SPS, too. We have hung out with his friends once. While mine have traveled here multiple times for weekends and barbecues and whatnot. It's just a very different vibe.

The difference in MHS, FHS, CHS, and SPS would surprise people. SSA girls were somewhat similar to the MHS girls, but I hung out with all different types of people from every walk of life, and some of them were vastly different. I have no idea how it is now, but they were different types of people when I grew up.
How old are yall and I might be able to offer some suggestions?

Mhs people are a lot more similar to Sps folk than Fhs, IMO.

Early 30s. We actually went out downtown one night, saw one of his oldest friends that I hadn't met yet. He came over hugged him and talked for 5 minutes, and then sat at the table next to us for hours and never said another word or invited us to join them. Very strange. I asked my SO what his deal was and he was like, "What? He didn't have plans with us. And they don't know you and I don't know the people he's with." Weirdest thing I've ever seen. If I see one my friends out, we would immediately get a larger table and catch up. Just very different.

The North Shore along with P-Ville and Laffy area are the best places to live in Louisiana for families.
Posted on 9/3/14 at 7:50 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
Greatlakes24: They all come from the same n-hoods. The stats for MHS/FHS are almost identical. My kids are friends from kids from StP, SSA, FHS and MHS. SSA is frankly overrated and the public honors/gifted kids meet and often exceed the private school kids. I know some parents that have one in private and one in public due to individual personalities.
What elite universities do the MHS, SSA and St. Pauls kids go to? Also the Northshore HS with the most National Merit Scholars was Northshore in Slidell. Maybe more Asians?

Damn it looks like I opened a shite storm. I think my brother and family moving to Covington is a great thing for him and his family. Wish all the N.O. people would get off their high horse and their N.O. is better than everyone else attitude. Both areas have their positives and negatives and not everyone wants to raise their children in the big city.
