Haven't been to BA but Santiago, which I really like, has smog issues and more petty crime (anecdotally at least).
Granted, in Santiago you can snow ski in the morning and go to the beach in the afternoon, so that is a nice perk

If you have a problem, I know who will solve it.
He hangs out between A1A and Detroit Ave.

As long as you're making decent money it's a great city to live in. The only thing it doesn't have that other major cities is proximity to mountains but it makes up for that with proximity to world class fishing and diving. If you buy a boat you can use it for weekend trips to the Bahamas and that's pretty hard to beat. I'm sure it'll get bashed here but as long as you're making a good living the amount of fun you can have is pretty much limitless.

My dad is from there and most of his family still lives in Dade County.
I think it's a pretty stereotyped, misunderstood place that has its good parts and bad, like anywhere else, but it also has some completely 'normal' parts that would be confused with virtually any other metro in the country.
It isn't some mystical, foreign city that some people like to think it is, though it is obviously one of the most international of American cities. There are only three metros in the Western Hemisphere with residents from every nation on earth - Toronto, NYC, Miami.

I am in S Fla right now. Been here a year, and can't wait to get back to La. The people are awful, driving is like being in a third world country, cost of everything is too high. I'll be back in La next week!
On the other hand, the weather and women are gorgeous. Unless you are rich, you have to work constantly to stay afloat.

I am thinking about it for my next stop. A good friend of mine is a good ole boy from South AL. He moved down there about 3 years ago. I thought he would hate it, but he absolutely loves it. He lives in a pretty nice suburb though.

I have a few friends that live there, working in the cigar business. The traffic, according to them, is horrendous. One shouldn't expect to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time, especially the airport.

Miami is a really fun city with a lot to do in and around. The down side is that it is super crowded and traffic everywhere is terrible, much worse than BR in my opinion.

I spent a couple of years in the area. If it was me I would prefer to live just north of there in the Ft. Lauderdale / Boca Raton area.
PROS - The gulfstream is just off the coast so you can go out just a couple of miles and have great fishing and scuba diving. We would even dive off the beach after a strong storm passed through for lobster without even having to go out in a boat. Theirs something to do most any night if you like sports. Tons of running events and triathlons if you are into it. I used to drive down to Hawk's Cay every couple months to spend the weekend fishing or diving. Back then we could take the one day cruise over to the Bahamas for the weekend (You didn't have to come and go the same day so we would go over on Friday and catch a ride back on Sunday). Great food, great nightlife, etc. Lastly, I was really surprised with the recreation activities. I never expected I would do much mountain biking in South Florida, but they really have some great trails. Don't expect many climbs, but old limestone pits make great bike trails. Add in the Brazilian pepper roots and you have some fine technical rides.
CONS - I really did not realize I would miss the outdoors and the four seasons. Looking back I could have spent more time around the everglades, but I really got tired of Palm Trees and manicured landscapes. I don't think I would want to raise a family there. It seems like people I worked and played with would just drop their kids at the mall instead of hiring a babysitter. I never got used to that. I guess their are good and bad people everywhere, but you really had to pay attention dealing with contractors, clients, customers etc and couldn't really rely on a handshake or a promise like you can in other areas. And lastly, it seemed that a large part of the population were transient and really did not expect to be there long so they didn't really make much attempt at trying to get to know people or making friends. I had never been anywhere that I didn't know my neighbors now did anyone seem to make any attempt to get to know each other. But the other side of that is that there's so many things to do it's pretty easy to get to know people if you are out and about.

South Beach is very expensive, looks old and outdated, and has way too many people running around acting like ballers. Tbh, the personality you portray on here doesn't go with South Beach at all.
The city is more normal.

The horse racing options are really good and if you enjoy world class polo it is one hour north. It is worth the drive to use the Ft. Lauderdale airport if needed. You will not regret exploring and learning about all the different Keys. The positives outweigh the negatives. Lastly, do not get involved in your condo or homeowner's associations. Those that do risk being shot.

Coral gables is pretty nice if you can afford it

South beach is like the French quarter. Overrun with tourists and a lot of people who live there don't really go there all that often. Brickell and coconut grove are two great neighbourhoods for a young professional type to live. Wynwood Is great too but not as livable IMO. . Tons of good breweries popping up If you're into that.

I misread title as "Tell me about Irving in Miami." Was expecting to read about an old Jewish guy.

So is there anyone who has actually lived there that can give an answer?
Grew up in Little Havana and there's plenty to do that isn't super expensive.

It's amazing if you can afford the beach, plenty old shite buildings you can live in for cheap, not cheap by normal standards but 40-50 year old 600 sq ft $1500/mo pads. If you do go try to live between 1st and 25th that was you can walk pretty much everywhere and don't need a car. South of fifth is where I live, it's imo the greatest neighborhood imaginable: all the best restaurants,a great park, perfect at the end of the island so minimal tourists. If you want major budget apartment there on the water look up rentals at 345 ocean drive it's super old but on the sand should be able to find something sub $2k. If money is no object then apogee is down the street from it that's the best in town
