Something like this happened to me a few years ago.
My wife ordered a bedroom set from Rooms to Go. When they delivered the furniture, the dresser was beat up. We called to have it replaced and was told that that particular set was discontinued and they could not replace it. We could either 1) Pick out a new set or 2) Pick a dresser from a different set. They refused to give a refund, which we wanted (we found a similar set at another store).
I finally had to get my credit card company involved before they would come pick up their shite. I refuse to shop at that place now.

. I've worn a 40L jacket forever and had to get this sent back for a 41L. My consistency is why I'm comfortable ordering jackets without trying them on. I think it was just the slimmer fit though. My other jackets still fit.

Real Nordstrom has some of the best CS on the planet so I'm pretty surprised you had to jump through all that shite at Rack

its just SOP anything bought with gift card can only get a gift card as refund, all stores have been doing this for years.
yes its understandable to be frustrated and they should have explained that to you first so you could return it first, then use the gift card to repurchase the correct size.
its a PITA but you can still do this by returning the second purchase for refund to your credit card, then rebuy the coat with your gift card

Nordstrom Rack is like the garage sale version of Nordstrom though. They might not have another version of something. Exchange process is probably not as simple due to that. Not saying this isn't annoying for the OP, just that I don't expect there return policies to be close to the same.

Sure, but why is that tied to not being able to return something for store credit or a different size? There's no way OP should have had to pay more to get a different size. That's just a horrible policy and one that's not going to keep a company a float when everyone else offers free shipping and returns.
