wouldn't it be great if they had a sports board for sport questions?

Even when McEnroe was playing, most people only paid attention to the Grand Slam tournaments. Golf’s popularity exploded in the late 90’s when Tiger came along. The lack of a male US tennis star since Agassi’s retirement has hurt the sport. The irony is the level of play from Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic has been incredible tennis to watch. And Federer and Nadal are both very easy to like.

I picked up tennis a few years ago and it amazes me it’s not more popular. I play 2-3 times a week. It’s a fun sport and great exercise. I’m 54 and in the best shape I’ve been in since my early 20’s. Golf could never do that.

Golf really is a crazy phenomenon as far as how fanatical people are about it and the amount of money there is in the sport. There are similar sports, or hobbies, that are similar in many regards but the following is nowhere in the same realm as golf (professional bowling, tennis, and fishing)

If you aren’t trolling, this is the biggest “old man yells at sky” thread we’ve seen in a while. And you answered your own question, except you failed to credit the Covid lockdowns with pushing golf’s popularity from ridiculous to the sublime.

I have never looked at a tennis court and said, "look how beautiful that court is, I have to add that one to my list to play one day." It's also hard to think of a guys "tennis trip" to the Robert Trent Jones tennis trail?

I am in my 40s and old enough to remember when tennis was a very big deal… when I was a little kid, watching John McEnroe was must see TV.. even some of the Sampras versus Agassi matches were legendary

There's your answer.

The interest in the sport (same with heavyweight boxing) drastically declined when there were no intriguing Americans competing at the top of the sport.

The Williams' sisters had great success but by in large, women won't bring men to the TV set week after week and women just won't watch sports in the numbers it takes to move the needle.

Same .

I started playing tennis later in life, and it’s one of my favorite things to do.. Kinda mad i didnt play more as a kid in the 80s, when it was all the rage.. Nowadays if i play singles tennis, even somewhat competitively, for an hour in the hot sun- it’s the best full body workout i can imagine, especially for someone who’s older, in their 40s, like me .

Golf and fishing….the biggest two ‘if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying’ sports out there for amateurs.

I honestly don’t know why tennis isn’t more popular. I spend a fortune on my hobbies, but my wife spends next to nothing on tennis. Public courts everywhere, league fees are next to nothing, etc.

That’s actually a good comparison, tennis with boxing…. I used to love the sweet science, but havent paid much attention since Tyson was at his peak.. Now the youngsters are all about the UFC and the MMA crap…. I know- Slow down ! THIS IS A NEIGHBORHOOD !! Haha

I think tennis declined in popularity with the technology improvements in the rackets. Watching old tennis matches there was a lot more touch, play at the nets etc.
Now watching a tennis match is all baseline to baseline with ball speeds so fast it is difficult to follow.

Even though I grew up somewhat poor, golf was more accessible to me than tennis was. But I lived down the street from the muni course and could walk or ride my bike there. I’d walk the woods to find golf balls and do odd jobs around the course to play for free.

I still play golf a few times a year, but it’s mostly a frustrating experience because I can’t score like I used to. At my best I was around a 10 handicap. I’m lucky to keep it under 100 these days.

Tennis you need someone equal or slightly better than you to play that’s not easy to find golf you can play by yourself

Tennis back in the day was a rally game with longer points. In the 80’s and 90’s it transformed into a power game and became less fun to watch. Now there are very few players who can win a tournament whereas golf has multiple players who can win.

Pickleball is taking over among recreational players because it is way more social than tennis and can be played at older ages easier like golf.
