What city do you live in? How old is your son?

To me, pickleball is a fad.. it’s like saying 30 or 40 years ago that Putt-Putt Golf will signal the end of the sport of golf as we know it… When i was a kid, Putt-Putt was hugely popular, but it never encroached on the popularity of actual golf, or of the PGA .
Not sure if a fad or not, but while pickleball is fun to play once you learn the bizarre rules, it's just terrible to watch, in my opinion. Not very entertaining at all.

I’m faster and more athletic but they can put that tennis ball anywhere they want with very little effort and will gas you by the end of the 1st set. I always feel like prey when I play an older person.

In my experience, watching a couple of chicks play tennis is a good way to get a boner.
You see them practicing in hot pants. The day they play regularly in hot pants is the day women's tennis becomes the most watched sport on TV.
And the reason it isn't as popular is we don't have any male champions anymore. IT was huge in the Sampras/Agassi era.
I play tennis. Anecdotally I'm seeing more and more people playing around my town.
I have a set of clubs that I'll use when asked to play golf. But I love tennis.

Tennis is footwork, hand eye and technique.
Do you have a public facility nearby that has tennis courts? If so, there’s almost certainly a tennis ball machine to rent and pros available.
If not, contact the pro shop at a private facility. Many clubs allow non-members to take open drills and/or private lessons.
I would strongly recommend a couple private lessons if he’s just learning. Starting off with proper technique goes a long way to building confidence. Using a ball machine to ingrain poor form will do more harm than good.
Pros also will know others his age and can set up group drills or introduce them to play independently. There should be tennis day camps available over the summer, also.
Finding a group of peers to play with would be a fantastic start for him after he’s taken some private or group lessons. After some time doing that, there are USTA youth leagues and tournaments. Don’t push him into that yet, though. It’s important for him to form technique and gain confidence before he starts competing tournaments and league. If he falls in love with tennis, there’s no turning back once he starts USTA youth play.
Hope your son falls in the love with the sport. Wish I’d started at 13

My wife is learning to play too. I’m trying to encourage her to buy a good tennis skirt, she wants to wear shorts. What is your advice and it wouldn’t be the OT if I didn’t ask for pics!

Ha! No tennis pics from me but I don’t fault you for asking on the OT.
And your wife should definitely wear tennis clothes. The clothes are 2/3 of the fun when you’re just starting out. I play on 4 tennis teams so I own waaay more tennis clothes than Street clothes since that’s what I wear 6-7 days a week.
Shorts are a horrible idea bc there’s no place to tuck the balls while playing. The ones with liners where you could tuck the ball create uncomfortable chafing. She will meet more local players to socialize and play with if she wears tennis clothes. Females always want to know what brand something new is and where she got it.
Tennis is most fun when you get into a group of people who play at your level. It’s a very social sport.
You should get out there and hit with them

Thanks for the advice. He’s been taking some group lessons through school. He really enjoys the sport, it’s the only one he practices on his own without encouragement. It probably doesn’t hurt that we go play and he can beat dad and we laugh and have fun. Tennis is a fun sport. I wish I would have learned to play earlier than 46!

Definitely encourage him to play with some of the kids from his group outside of school!
Sadly, our local schools don’t have the best players bc my club is actually a Junior Academy for USTA. Most kids who show real promise leave school for PE and attend the academy for classes there. It makes it tough for a kid just getting into it to get the chance to play with strong peer opponents.
It’s also super humbling for us adults when the Juniors stick around to watch our matches when they’re done with practice for the day. Having a 16 year old who is a top 10 ranked amateur nationwide watching you play is a little intimidating
Up side is we get the benefit of learning from the same pros.
