The most interesting watch ever posted slips into the thread unnoticed. 6263 Big Red!

I was on vacation the last 2 Fridays and took the pictures but got busy and forgot to post.

Panerai Submersible 243

Last week I wore this and didn't notice the picture was poor until just now.
It is one I built, I am not really happy with it yet and may ultimately change everything but the dial which is the reason for building it to begin with. The more watches I build the more I realize how difficult a coherent design is if you are copying a known entity.

The dial is Fordite Wiki and this piece is from the Jeep Gladiator line. If you don't want to look at the Wiki it is built up paint overspray on car assembly lines that gets baked over and over.

The movement is a Seiko (SII/TMI) NH-38A either built in Japan or Malaysia and there is no way of knowing. Dirt cheap, extremely reliable, and there are a million cases/dials/hands made for them.

The rest of the watch is from China, 39mm Milgauss shaped case, "Jubilee" style bracelet and an unidentifiable handset.

One interesting thing is that if the US had the same qualifications for Made in the US as Switzerland does this watch would qualify for Made in the US.

The picture is washed out because I was trying to get the metal flake in the paint and didn't notice until today when I saw it larger. Oh well.

Today I dipped into my wife's box again and grabbed her IWC Mark XX Patrouille Suisse in titanium. I would have bought the black or blue one in SS but its her watch. She bought several of the straps in bright colors, the EasX-CHANGE strap system is what sold her because she can change straps without bothering me. I must admit it is one of the better quick-switch systems. While the parts on the strap are proprietary, they attach to standard spring bars so you can use any 20mm strap on the watch and the straps will fit any watch that takes a 20mm strap on spring bars. The rubber is nice but as one would expect overpriced.

Ok friends, i have 2 watch stories for you today! I'll post each seperately:

First, my FiL was trying to be nice because he knows how much i love watches and got me this...ridiciculous...thing.

its FIFTY-THREE mm and weighs about the same as the anvil on my back porch and came in a massive green plastic bucket like you get with a new Glock.

but in the interest of being a good son-in-law, i took the thing home and tried to size it.

HOLY CRAP. those pins were put in by Satan's angels themselves. I ruined about 10 watch-pin tools trying to remove a link and finally HAD TO GET A frickING NAIL AND HAMMER and HAMMER THE frickER OUT.

No harm no foul, the pin is inside the link anyway so who cares if the head of it is fricked up.

TL;DR; i don't hate it! my left arm looks like Popeye's now.

second watch story (better CSB for you) a really good friend of mine just inherited an old rolex after a family member passed that he wore briefly at LSU in the 80s before said family member wanted it back.

the family member in question didn't treat it very well, in fact replaced the black face w/ PURPLE and took the original bezel off and SUPER-GLUED a purple bezel in place.

yada yada, he was told it was a 1964 GMT and he had a buddy in town who is VERY into rolexes and he was unable to take the back off and told him not to get his hopes up; the watch had been frankenstein-ed so he wasn't even sure what he had.

anyway, he let the guy take it home with him so he could use his professional equipment to break into it and the guy calls him babbling like a kid at christmas. said he verified the serial number and it was the real deal.

turns out its a *1958* GMT; i guess the first year rolex made that model and after verifying the serial #, etc. told him this was a slam dunk he needed to pay $5k or whatever to have it restored. it has the alternating black/red date numbers like the pic i'll post at the end of this.

keep in mind, the watch still worked, obviously just didn't keep very good time.

so he's got the watch back and trying to figure out the best way to restore it (he's got the original pepsi/blue/red bezel in a ziploc) but he'll have to get a new black face from rolex since the original is gone.

anyway, even thought its worth tens-of-thousands of dollars, he wants to fix it and keep it as a family heirloom which i totally support.

obtuse? papi? any suggestions on who he should reach out to for the restoration and tips on what to repair or not repair to maximize/retain its value?

i know just enough to be dangerous and said you probably don't want to polish out all the patina/scratches on the case but i'm sure y'all know exactly what to do and NOT to do to maintain its value.

here's what it should look like after restoration. WHO TAKES THAT GOREGOUS BEZEL OFF A CLASSIC WATCH??

Still rocking the Muhle Glashutte, since it's my only "nice" watch. Next on the wish list are a Speedy, a GMT Master II or Explorer II, and a Breguet Marine Big Date, more or less in that order.

ETA Pic is from earlier this year which accounts for the wrong date.

The thing is a beast. Designed for the German maritime search and rescue service. I believe you could drop a cinderblock on it and it wouldn't phase it.

Was digging through some old stuff the other day, and discovered this Blockbuster Video watch that I got for selling the most Directv systems, or something like that. Doesn't work though

A G Shock I bought decades ago in the Esplanade mall. It was a gift to myself after graduating college and getting my first "real" job at a shitty finance company.
