Oh, I get what they are and how to calculate it.

My point is basically similar to yours: what if energy usage isn't the best metric to scale how advanced a civilization is.

the emphatic denial or acceptance of alien life is ludicrous. The fact is, we just don't know. Because the universe is so expansive, it is probable that there is something out there, but we just don't know.

I agree with this 100%. The scientific inquiry process does not allow for "whelp there's just gotta be".

Thing is, if machines were the way it would go, then you would think the math would dictate the machines would already be here since they would be able to send billions of themselves into every direction maybe a billion years ago.

That's why the question, "Where is everybody?" Holds weight.

You're assuming that our machine overlords would want to conquer the universe. Exploring The Matrix would be much more efficient than exploring space.

On my most stressed out days, it's super comforting to be like, "oh well. I'm just living in an AI world, and none of this actually matters."

I assume all civilizations reach the ability to creat sex robots, then it just spirals down from there.

The problem we make is that we have no understanding of what life is or is not outside of our own limited earthview.

I believe, as many do, that there are forms of life that would be completely foreign to what we believe our knowledge of "life" is. "Life" in the universe would be as strange to us as an airliner would be to a citizen of ancient Rome.

Yet, we continue to guess what that life form would be. And, there is little chance that we are right. So, all these complex theories make for great debate, but do little to ferret out the truth.

What we likely know is that we had visitors from some other place, aliens who assisted the ancients and then disappeared (for reasons we cannot fully explain).

The sad thing is that in our lifetimes it is almost a certainty that we will never know what is out there.

And, if we don't do something about climate change, we will never know.

It also could be that there are millions of different planets that are just way to far for us to ever communicate with, and they are about as advanced as we are.

This is probably true, but I hope and believe that there are exceptions who can and who have communicated with us.

Climate change?

You're the one who thinks that place in Alaska made hurricane Katrina or sandy right?

We are already developing some of the most advanced AI we could possibly imagine, with an AI recently becoming the first to show self-awareness

Back up.

When the hell did we invent aware artificial intelligence?

Geo-engineering. Been here for a long time. There is a lot of nefarious, evil stuff going on in that area.

Then why not use it everyday as a form of population control?

You'll have to ask the geo-engineers.

For instance, if we find multicellular life somewhere on Mars and Europa, then it pretty much means the odds for humanity pretty much suck.

It would just mean that we need to hope that the "great filter" is somewhere between multicellular life and human intelligence. The real nail in the coffin would be if we found the remains of a previous intelligent alien civilization.

We believe our current technology is the be all/end all. Fact is future people will make advances that will make us look like the Rome/airliner you allude to. Can you just imagine the look on the face of a person in 1900 if you explained neutrinos to them? We are stuck in believing the laws of physics are complete and infallible. This will change.

Hellz bellz, they might just discover faults in the computer model concerning global warming. Just think, they may just go back to an impending ice age prediction.
