Not really sure exactly what they were supposed to do different in that situation. You should NEVER try and run from a bear. Expert advice tells you to remain calm and stay still, or maybe try and slowly back away from its path.
I guess you could argue that they should have had bear spray.

It's probably used to getting snacks off of tourists along the trail- which isn't the best idea because they eventually become INSISTANT.
