It is
quote:

would have sucked for me to go in wanting fighters

No matter what you do in the military or in life for that matter if you say it will suck if you don't get a certain community or job, you will always find yourself in the suck not with the job. Shoot for what you want, but be happy with the overall experience.

I have friends in the Navy that are miserable because they did not fly a certain platform or a certain duty station, when if they did not focus on the one thing so much they would have happiness in their job.

I hear what you're saying and that is a good approach to life. I think would have been devastated though.

You wouldn't be alone. One of my best friends was enlisted with me for 12 years then got his commission. He's 33 and a 2LT

HUGE DIFFERENCE in that one though...as a "prior service enlisted" 2LT, he has a LOT more cred with the soldiers than a newly minted 23 year old 2LT right out of a service academy or other major university........

I've been a little research on it, I don't think I will get accepted to OCS as I had a 3.1 GPA in a non scientific field.

Enlisted pay looks like it is going to be a problem. I have 1500$ worth of bills as it is.

Spent 4 yrs in AF. I was a Air Traffic Controller. If i had to do it over again I would have stayed in. A buddy of mine went in when I did. Just retired with 26 yrs. Got a good retirement. And now has a civil service job. AF has great facilities and according to your job you can stay out of harms way.

Yeah, even with a degree/experience, etc, even if they took you in as an E-4 after basic, if you have 1500/month bills off the bat your quality of life/discretionary income might be a bit tight for awhile......

Do not go enlisted If you once got accepted to west point make that will help your selection board.

Also why would you want to go into the CHair Force?

do it now. Sign up for 4 or 6 years.. If you don't like it, make sure you take advantage of the opportunity to travel/go to school. Then you can get a degree in whatever job you choose and use that degree plus the 4-6 years of on the job training to obtain a similar job in the outside world.

Being that you are single, you will be living in the dorms. You won't pay anything for living, and they will take money out of your check to allow you to eat at the Dining facility for "free". Free being the money they take out of your paycheck.

I know, but I wouldn't imagine I am the best candidate right now. Just being realistic.

There's a massive drawdown in force personnel numbers going on right now and officer accessions are really tight.

This is not a good time for people off of the street to aspire to be commissioned officers for either active duty OR reserve forces.

ROTC graduates and enlisted persons going to Officer Candidate School and other such programs are the way to go right now.

There will always be good opportunities for outstanding junior enlisted folks with some years of experience to get selected to Officer Candidate School (or equivalent). They will finish the school as a commissioned officer and have a very promising career opportunity, because they have already proven their mettle as an enlisted military member.
