I would love the USA to split the technology of ICE, EV, & HFC vehicles. Going all in on EV's is a retarded gesture by proggs.

That’s the best part about innovation.

It always leads to an amazing answer.

It’s the whole reason i always wonder why the frick anyone hates capitalism

It's fine just we just need $100 trillion of Chinese solar panels and wind turbines and then it'll be green hydrogen

Shouldn't be that difficult to understand.

Competition drives innovation.

When you live in a "build a better mouse trap world", guess what? you get better mouse traps.

Also, competition is coming, unless you think that every other manufacturer in the world is going to strike out on their EV designs.
Tesla stands to make more money if the other manufacturers manage to build successful EVs. Tesla needs them to succeed. Tesla opened their patent portfolio to help them succeed.

Now you add in Toyota, known for quality, who is working on a hydrogen V8.
I used to like the idea of hydrogen engines, but it's simply not viable for passenger vehicles. It can only ever be a niche toy. Might be some applications in flight or special-purpose vehicles, but there are too many show-stoppers for it to be used by the masses.

I know that Elon has a loyal army of fan boys, but competition is coming and to think that they will all strike out and that we will all be driving Teslas is delusional and illogical.
I'm not sure anyone has ever even had that thought.

you could use electricity to make hydrogen via electrolyzers...

hello, the man who popularized this is the 80's was murdered.

A montgomery, alabama man already invented a hydrogen-burning engine. he's probably gonna wait for them to get finished then sue.

It takes more energy to produce hydrogen than you get out of it.

The losses involved in transmission of electricity are significant, hydrogen could still be a more efficient energy transport mechanism.

If you're generating more electricity just to produce hydrogen, then you're wasting energy in the conversion when you could store it in a battery and drive a motor with it.

Most hydrogen is obtained by stripping it out of natural gas using steam reformation, it is far more efficient than electrolysis.

I expected this thread to be full of ignorant shite; I was not disappointed.

1. Toyota and Honda are pushing hydrogen because the Japanese government is pushing hydrogen. There are reasons for this, feel free to look them up.

2. Toyota and Honda are big into hydrogen because the Japanese government is heavily subsidizing hydrogen research, to the tune of billions of dollars.

But tell me some more about Teslas subsidies.

3. The US government under Bush made a billion dollar hydrogen research investment in the mid 2000s. It didnt lead to much because hydrogen sucks as automotive fuel.

4. Hydrogen cars receive the SAME EXACT $8,000 tax credit as bevs. The government hasnt "picked" a winner. If anything they went big on hydrogen first. The reason hydrogen hasn't taken off is that hydrogen sucks, and Bevs are pretty awesome.

Also fossil fuels are pretty great too.

All this talk about hydrogen and the earth and the environment always brings me back to cows and methane... I've had goats milk. I could live off of it if forced too. Goats have horns which are useful. Their feces make for better compost than cattle. Give me a couple of chickens and a walking stick and frickinA man it's great to be an American.

Still blows my mind that US manufacturers are actually ahead of the Japanese for the first time in 40+ years and most of the America First Patriots are rooting for the the Japanese to win.

Japan is woefully behind on EV tech compared to US and Germany. We should crush them.

Call Toyota and explain to them how they are wasting their time and money.

I'm sure that they will be grateful.

I realize that, however my post was in response to a post about electrolysis.

That depends on your source of energy input. In the case of producing hydrogen via electrolysis using wind energy that would otherwise be wasted, I'm not sure it can get much more efficient than that. Wind turbines with electrolyzers and fuel cells on site could be a winning combination vs. grid-scale batteries.

They are still losing their arse on the Mirai FCV. They as well as all the other manufacturers will lose a lot of money on dead-end tech as the market sorts itself out. It is just a cost of doing business.

I personally think FCVs have better long-term upside than H combustion engines but they have to cover their bases.

The last time that I stopped into a Buick/GMC dealership I was only able to find 1 vehicle built in the USA.
The rest were assembled in Mexico or China.

So much for "US Manufacturers".

GM took the bailout money, didn't pay it back, and are moving plants to mexico and china as fast as they can.

Meanwhile there are massive Honda & Toyota plants in Columbus Ohio, Georgetown KY, Texas etc.

So if you buy a GM vehicle made in China you are buying American vs buying a Toyota/Honda made by your neighbor in Ohio/Kentucky/Texas?

Columbia SC was going to be the Mecca of hydrogen cells. I think they were going to run all of their city busses off of it and then suddenly no one was talking about hydrogen anymore.

You can still find ads for the concept hydrogen powered Hummer out there from when we tried this.

But then I think…the Japanese aren’t stupid so who knows?
