My boy's had one for a while. He just turned 12, used 10Gb on a 3Gb plan this month. frick!
All it takes is streaming just a few YouTube videos on cellular to do that, unfortunately.

Wow you are the perfect parent and have it all figured out. We are all just jealous of your stoic perfection.
How old are you? Got kids?

This has literally been a thing like forever.

The penetration of social media into every aspect of teenagers' lives is toxic.
Unfortunately, that train has left the station. We need a society wide movement where everyone significantly lessens the time on social media.

Yet you come and start threads on the OT for literally just about every life decision there can possibly be.
I have no idea how you can be such an authority on parenting when I look at the threads you’ve started over the past 5 years and it scares me to think you can even get out of bed every morning on your own

Even toddlers know how to use smart phones now.

She also isn't allowed to have any social media accounts.
The HS kids use social media to share notes and work on homework in groups. There are no paper party invitations, just posts. Rides, events, school news, etc. Little is planned in advance because they don’t have to. They communicate almost exclusively via social media. You can throw down the hammer and have the kid practicing violin while everyone else plays in the street, or you can educate yourself, have passwords and monitor activity. There’s always room for mistakes (huge, instant mistakes), but that’s with everything to a degree. At some point you give them more room and hope their brains and your parenting are enough for them to navigate the waters. I hate it and it scares me to death, but in 2018 it’s the norm. Our parents and grandparents had Elvis’ hips, punk and rap music, pot, cable TV, etc. to worry about. We have smartphones.

Do you believe everything you read online? This is just pure entertainment for me as I'm sure it's the same for you as well. When I have major life decisions to make, I have my small circle of folks I confide in and it's not the OT.

My kid is only 13 and going to the 8th grade. I'll cross that bridge whenever she gets to high school. I'm not worried about that at this point.

All valid points, thanks
Just having trouble accepting it
Damn, when did I become a curmudgeon? I’m not that old! Haha

Judging by my older siblings and friends in their age range, it was all about parents being able to stay in touch with the kids 24/7. No more unstructured time or just riding around on bikes for a couple hours until they're supposed to be home.

In Madison, one-half of all 8-yr. olds have a smartphone.

My next door neighbor bought red iPhone 8s for all three of his sons - one of whom is going to 1st grade and one who is 16 months old

Thanks, but it's not needed. I don't give empty threats when it comes to disciplining my kids. I set the rules and consequences and it's up to them if they choose to break the rules and want to suffer the consequences. I've never had many problems with my kids following the rules because they understand up front what will happen if they don't.
Way back in the day when I was in high school I knew a few chicks who had parents just like you. They walked a straight and narrow line in school. Very well mannered and proper. Boy the second they got out of daddy’s reach though...
Do you prefer papa, pawpaw, grandpa, what? It’ll come sooner than you think.

Yes, my teens have smartphones. I see no reason to block them from modern day technology because some assholes & bitches ruin it for everybody. That’s fricking dumb. Keep them from it, and then throw them to the wolves? I do monitor their communications, but I’m not one of those c u n t helicopter parents. To deny privileges because some kids are fricking assholes, is fricking stupid. If they violate that trust, I’ll deal with it appropriately.

When they all learned what fricking was at 10. 10 is the new 13. We are going backwards.
In 10 years we will hear of 9 year olds getting it on in the elementary bathrooms.
