That is awful. Prayers for that family.

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you capsize a pontoon boat?

stop being a giant pussy and stop trying to silence people. The person you responded to is correct.

How intricate was their duck blind that you could become trapped inside of it? People don't have enough common sense around water.

In dark, cold water people tend to panic and what appears easy may have been futile.

Now you or he doesn’t know anymore about the situation then what has been posted in this thread. To wholesale it was stupid is a bit premature.

So you stop acting like a dickhead yourself.

Awful.

Cold water is no joke. Had a guy fall off the boat once and luckily got him out of the water in a few minutes. He still had hypothermia and had to go to the hospital.

Multiple people in the water :/

He had some solid points but have a little decency and be tactful. These people made a fatal mistake and a man had to live with this fact for the rest of his life. No need to bash people over this.

I'm not talking of the deceased people...I'm speaking of the setup of the blind boat, which obviously wasn't secured correctly not to be able to flip. I'm sure it had sides which probably kept them trapped when flipped over (as evidenced by the dog being trapped as well). It terrible on all accounts. But there was a tremendous amount of neglect for this to occur.

Bless all this has hurt

I was wondering the same thing. Another report clarified the situation as they were stepping off the pontoon boat into another boat with a blind on it. The blind boat capsized.

ETA: A post in he Outdoor Board says it was an enclosed blind with one door and shooting windows. I would imagine a few people were it it, it flipped completely upside-down, and the occupants were disoriented in the chaos of trying to figure which way is up after slamming into one another in the cold water and darkness. Terrible.

I agree 100%

Vast majority of all accidents can be avoided by simply using a little common sense.

Something similar happened to a 20 something y/o girl on the Buffalo River in AR last year. She ran into a downed tree on the river and her canoe capsized and pinned her under the water against the tree, killing her.

I wonder how they got stuck under the boat? Terrible thing to happen though.
49 degrees is nothing to sneer at - that's cold, and you'll need to figure out how to get enough leverage to get out real quick.

Heavy wet clothes? Nothing above your head you can reach up to to pull yourself? You're in trouble.

Edit: I don't know any of the details, but that's the first thing that came to my mind.

The blind was most likely top heavy and rolled as they were getting in, sounds like 3 were already in the blind.

Do a quick google image search of pontoon blinds and you will see all types.
