'm pretty OK with it. She earned the grades fair and square while holding a part time job with a legit company who withheld taxes from her pay checks. It's not necessarily her fault for being undocumented. She's just a kid.
Undocumented or not she earned it. The tweet was stupid and gone are the days when people can put their foot in their mouth without ruining their lives. She learned that lesson the hard way.
I really have no issue with any of it other than her posting that Mexican flag.
I honestly don't care if undocumented kids take scholarships. I care mildly about the system that allows that, but I do not care when some kid earns a merit-based scholarship and just happened to have been brought over here illegally. The idea that such a kid is "stealing" is moronic.
I do care that she's waving the flag of a shithole country that couldn't have afforded her any of this opportunity, likely out of spite for the countrymen of the place which gave it to her.

I'm paying lots of money in taxes and health insurance while people like her will pay little to no taxes and receive free health insurance on my dime.
She's a fricking child that's working a part time job. What more do you want her to do? CVS withheld taxes on every one of her pay checks, she did the best she could. She went to school, made good grades, got a scholarship to a university, what more could people ask for?
People act like she swam across the boarder, stole someones spot in a public school, and took a scholarship away from someone else. I guess you frickheads would rather her stay at home all day, not get educated, not go to college, and flee back to mexico first chance she gets.

If she was truly as smart as she thinks she is she'd keep her mouth shut about being undocumented and just enjoy free-riding
She's not free-riding shite. Free-riding would be not working or going to school while sitting at home collecting a check from the government. She got a full ride to UT, she's far from stupid. She said something stupid, but I'm willing to bet you say some stupid shite sometimes.

Whats frustrating with this girl is she's the valedictorian and cant grasp this isnt about race. Its about you went to school that costs taxpayers about $12,000 a year without your family contributing to the system and now you're going to go to college on the taxpayers dime. Sure you would contribute down the road but that doesnt matter, its a one way street you and your family are taking and not putting into the system....legally. Im sure her parents have great cash only jobs that require no taxes .

do we know this?
or are these just assumptions?
how do we know one of her parents are not legal and pay taxes?

why would her parents be legal but not her?

I'm the same way. I guess it speaks to just how awful/non-existent our immigration system is

1. Teenagers are stupid.
2. She has a deferred status so she's technically legal.
3. I'd rather pay an undocumented valedictorians tuition than the money we waste on retards here in the state of Louisiana who can't keep up a 2.3 gpa.

She as an exemption because she got hauled across the border when she was a 2-3 year old child by her parents.

She's a child. You can't expect her to understand how an undocumented person waving their flag on a foreign countries soil could be taken as offensive.
To be honest, I don't have a problem with the flag. She's from Mexico and she proud to be from Mexico, I take no issues with that. How much do you want to bet she will be wearing red white and blue an watching fireworks on the 4th of July? It was an emoji of a Mexican flag, it's not like she was burning the stars and stripes in protest of the US government.
The system that's in place has to allow for kids to be rewarded for hard work in school, regardless of the status. The kids making good grades aren't the problem, so why stop them from furthering their education? Sure, some might take that education back to their home country but I'm willing to bet most of them stay and become productive tax payers.

Well, in TX with the 10% rule for UT and A&M, she technically took a spot from someone else to attend.

No way parents are legal and she is not. You are right the process can take years as you say but traditionally not for kids of legal citizens. Mine took 15 years. And to see 12 million minimum just skip that process is more antagonizing then you can imagine.

I can't tell if you're joking.
She's 18.
I'm not going to pretend we haven't regressed, but prior generations were fighting wars and starting families at her age. Setting aside what they wanted to do to accomplish what they had to do.
Her mistake isn't unforgivable, but it's a mistake, and she should be rightly criticized. If she figures out she is wrong, and shows loyalty to the US, good for her.

I don't care if immigrants from Mexico retain some of their heritage and take some pride in the accomplishments of their former country. But plenty of those people don't wear red white and blue, and can be found doing things like cheering against the United States in soccer and throwing bottles at USA fans.

What's funny about this whole thing is by and large people on this forum bitch and moan about a certain generation being easily offended. Then some 18 year old Mexican girl comes along, makes strait A's and puts a Mexican flag emoji in a twitter post and grown men on tiger droppings are all of a sudden OUTRAGED.
OMG how can she put that shite hole countries flag on her twitter. Triggered. Go back to mexico if you love it so much blah blah blah blah

This. She's a kid without much common sense and appeared to be bragging about cheating Americans for a free education. Not a huge deal. Crazy every one gets so bent out of shape for conservatives requesting others do things legally. She's a capable girl though. I say legal her up, put her to work, and collect a higher income tax than the standard illegal pays. (avg 1,000 a year compared to avg 7,000 legals pay) And if she wants to send 3/4 of her paycheck to her family in Mexico, go right ahead. Just charge her a little outgoing wire tax and make a little more off of her.
