I worked in Pecos for a year. Its miserable.
Sure, you could live in Odessa, which is slightly less miserable.
If this is long term with family, don't do it. If its short term and you're single trying to grow career. It could be worth a shot. But know its gonna suck.

Pecos is a huge no. Odessa is really your only choice.
Is this a long term move? Kids?
If it’s a good move career wise and not just the money but experience and stuff then it is doable.
Weigh out housing, schools if kids, cost of living etc.

I'm assuming your either Oil & Gas, a meth dealer or a pimp because that's about all there is in Pecos.
All kidding aside, its not the most beautiful place in the world but depending on salary and hobbies/interest it may be worth it. I wouldn't have done it in my 30's but now that I'm older and hate most people, I could easily live there.

I'm single, but my kids are already in Odessa with my Ex. Only two reasons I'm considering this job are; being near my kids, my son plays ball, so I'd like to see him play, and the money. Not really much of a career move though. What is the cost of living like there? I know the housing market is crazy due to the oil field, especially with it being back on an uptik. I doubt if I would buy anything anytime soon. I know I'll have 5 projects going which are expected to last around 7 years.
For the record you guys are really painting an enticing picture of life out there. Lol

If you close your eyes and think of hell, that is Midland/Odessa or really anywhere in the Permian. If you are in O&G and haven't made a tour in that shitehole, then you need to go just to check it off the list though.
Maybe one day I’ll knock it off the list just for fun

cant get the time back with your kids. Just do it, couldnt image not being there for my kids and especially not watching my kids play ball....frick all that. Would suck it up and move anywhere to be close to them.

It's flat, dusty, windy, can be hot AF and cold AF, sometimes in the same week. Restaurants are usually packed, home prices are still high, the scenery is arse (people and environment), and there's not much "big city" outside of Midland/Odessa.
But it's still better than Williston. frick that place.

Don’t do it. I fell for this trap about 2 years ago. I was fortunate enough to have a few friends out there, but even then it still sucked arse.

This changes the scenario considerably, you probably should have led with this

I thought the same thing until I started rotating out here. It's not as bad as people act.

Pretty incredible achievement honestly
Midland isn’t bad as a place as people make it seem. It’s not great but it’s a place to make money for a few years. It’s a shock if you’re used to the greenery of Louisiana/East Texas and it’s more expensive than you will expect. It’s also largely safe with a strong economy when the O&G market is good. Flights to Houston/Dallas/Denver/Vegas are easy.
Don’t live in Pecos, the drive out there from Midland isn’t bad
If you have family out there too I’d recommend it

Yep. I'd be there in a heartbeat if my kids were there. They are only young once.

Turn your oven to 350 degrees, put a sandbox in it then climb in and shut the door.

There are a lot of shitty oil towns in this country but Williston is the WOAT. Williston makes Midland look like Manhattan or Las Vegas as far as entertainment options go

I make several trips a year to Midland/Odessa for work.
If I was younger & single, then I probably would've taken an offer to work out there full time at some point. No chance I'd do that with a family though.
i'm from San Angelo, but my dad's family is from Odessa. He went there very infrequently and didn't care for the town or the family that stayed there.
If you're young and want to make some money and can deal with it... sure. I wouldn't take my family.
My BiL is in Houston and his company tried to get thim to take a job out there for about $500k a year before bonuses and he just couldn't bring himself to do that to his family.
If you paid me $500k and let me live in San Angelo or Abilene and gave me a car, per diem, and 3 days actually in the area and the rest remote work... sure. But that's quite literally the only way i would work there. I don't say that with an ounce of exaggeration or bravado.
ETA: didn't see the Ex-wife/child situation. i mean being closer to your kids is important. so if the money is a good option, then yes, i'd do it.
do you get along with the ex to where she'd be happy that you're there?

Pecos / Odessa Texas. How bad is it really out there? I think the job will be headquartered in the middle of those two towns.

This is the correct answer. The good news is, you're very close to the Trans-Pecos region which I find highly desirable for recreational activities.
EDIT. just saw the kids part. Get the frick out there.
