Fun fact: Darry Beckwith works under him learning the ropes

Actually, Beckwith just recently started with a large (Top 20-ish) mostly SEC regional agency as an EB producer.

They're all automated now.
That agent gives you the illusion of having someone looking out for you that's local....

Captive agents just take your info, enter it into a system. Thats basically the extent of their work. They might have a small team that handles id cards/adding or revising policies/taking down claim info.

Independent agents do more work in terms of collecting info and marketing out to the various companies. They have to form relationships with underwriters from different carriers, find different markets for your risk, etc.

That said there are just some lazy agents that have either A. inherited a large book of business from a family member. B. are in the latter years of their career and just skating on renewals. Those are the ones that aren't in a hurry to return your calls or get shite done. Insurance has a huge nepo baby aspect to it.

I mean I love the confidence some of these posters have.

"Fully automated"
"Don't do anything but enter info into a system and have a small team."

To be fair, I do say Plant baws don't do shite but eat snacks and watch Netflix.

Most of my buddies and family are operators. I hear “Must be nice” every time I do something fun. I always offer to let them come work for me and I’ll help them get an agency rolling themselves. None of them have taken me up on it yet.

That's a good point. I've never understood why there aren't more agents if they do nothing and make bank?

I actually do have a buddy that left O&G to become an agent.

This is my soapbox rant...

These guys aren't worth a piss.

They didn't do anything for my 2 roof claims that were denied. I had to pay out of pocket.

I have State Farm. Lets look at my billings:

$4300 Home
$8244 Life Policies
$7368 Auto and Umbrella

As far as residential clients, I am probably worth the investment to keep since I am spending $20,000 a year.

Not once have I met this guy. I always get an assistant. They do absolutely nothing besides provide a face and cash checks.

The real squirrley ones will sell their "business" family to continue the grift when they get ready to cash out.

That's entirely possible, but it's not possible to sell the book, as there is nothing to sell.

i laugh my arse off everytime says...why dont you just sell the book on here.

i do find it funny too when people act like being an agent is easy, especially an SF agent.....if they only knew

I worked in insurance for a bit. Considered buying a book until I realized the turnover was crazy high for your staff. Honestly, it’s a frick ton of work some days and then slow as shite others. Spent a lot of the day dealing with dipshits regarding billing and basic information stuff. Calling leads. Building policies, which can be a pain in the arse depending on what all is needing coverage. But, I damn sure called my folks back.

It's been great entertainment over the years.

Posters have no clue what the contract looks like, comp, incentives, ownership, or damn near anything else but act like they've got it all figured out.

I love what I do, but it's by no means a cakewalk especially in the first 5 years or so.

Breaking News: They ALL do it. It's not because they don't want to. They get you set up with a policy and quote you. They're done. Now if you need to make a claim, you call the 800 number. Again, that's the way it's done with every one of them. You inconvenienced yourself for no reason.

yea and they think that the agents can pick and chose what houses they write, that they get discounts on their own insurance etc

they also think every agents gets the trips and they either think agents do not make anything at all as in under 75k, or they think they are all multi millionaires with office managers who go into the office once a week.

the misconceptions are wild

Comp across the board is all over the place. There are some agents that don't invest in their teams or business and scrape by. There are some agents that make 400-800k in bonuses alone annually. The opportunities are vast but it's not just some automatic money printer.

I'd venture to guess this board takes the under on overall agency comp because they are using Glassdoor or some such nonsense.
