Find something you can make a living doing, with no one but yourself and your customers to report to.
I know lawn guys with their own business who are happier Ave better off than many office workers.

Have you shadowed anyone?
Something I'm doing more of now because I didn't make it a big enough priority while in school (not smart, obviously). Shadowed a few pharmacists (boring), a couple doctors, physical therapists, etc. I like aspects of the careers, but I struggle with the thought of getting there, especially the time and finances.

An MD's salary, particularly if in the upper 2/3 of specialty comp, will more than make up for the upfront investment to get through schooling and residency. If you can get in, your bigger concern is if you want to be a doctor for 20+ years.

I'm a carpenter. Good living if you like working with your hands. Provides for my family to have a better upbringing than I had. I do move a lot though so that's a big downside. If you have ties you don't want to be far from I wouldn't recommend plant work at all

Lawyer with a solo practice. Kept the lights on for a year now and trying to expand. Love a lot of what I do, minus the pain in the arse clients and most attorneys.

environmental scientist/aquatic biology. do a bit of regulatory work and identifying streams/wetlands usually for subdivision development. i'd make more money in the private sector but probably get less satisfaction from my job and have shitty hours.
hard to top doing stream surveys when the weather is nice though. i expect i'll be doing this forever.

I'm a perfusionist. In layman terms I run the heart-lung machine during open heart surgery. If you want to be in a medical field but not have to do med school, new grads are currently getting $100K+ offers right out of school. (School is an extra 1-2 years post college costs about a tenth of what med school does).

I get paid by a corporation to literally do nothing, I don't want to work for them, but they don't want me working for the competition so I remain on the payroll, get to use corporate resources, and do whatever I want. Like the guy in the movie says, I have a particular skill set acquired over a long career, only a handful of people in the world know what I know.
