That having been said a majority of the public HBCU underperform, and do not meet the basic standards states and the federal governments set for other universities. It is no coincidence the best HBCUs are the private ones, because they can selectively choose who they accept.
Yup if my kid wants to go to Howard, Morehouse or Hampton i will have no issues. But frick it will be expensive.

No matter how good Hampton is compared to FAMU, it's not on the same level as Vanderbilt, even UGA
I seem to remember Hampton being ranked by US news in the teens between Rice and Notre Dame. I'm thinking Vanderbilt was somewhere in the neighborhood.
This was at least a couple of years ago though.
ETA: never mind. I just looked it up and that was a regional ranking.

Just looked and all I see is Hampton ranked 18th among regional schools in the South. That would seemingly put them behind Mercer, UNCW, Loyola, etc.

A lot of them have had white kickers and quarter backs.

I got my Mster's from an HBCU. It was fine because I had a great research project and a very good major adviser, which is the most important thing in my field. Plus we were allowed to take classes at any state university. If I went there for undergrad it would have been bad though. I audited an undergrad class and it was incredibly easy but the students were terrible. The professor was good, but he was forced to teach a very mediocre class because the students couldn't handle any more. That and the administration is terrible. Paperwork was always getting lost, grad students weren't getting paid, and there was blatant corruption.

This, it is very hard for me to blame a student that comes from a public, non charter, high school in New Orleans, that goes to SUNO. When he or she gets there, most of the buildings need repairs to merely be functional, and need major overhauls to even be near what a normal 4 year institution is like. That having been said, to be a professor in this day and age you have to love what you do, and that goes for every professor at every school. Yes being tenured is awesome, but don't kid yourself most professors could make a ton in the private sectors in their respective fields.
It starts from the top, and in Louisiana we have 2 HBCUs that need major changes because they are quite frankly not good enough in any way (Grambling and SUNO). Have one that is nationally and even internationally known as a top HBCU for historical reasons and a university that can pull from all over the country which is a huge plus for Baton Rouge and LA in general, in Southern. But even Southern as some can attest to needs some changes, it is not what it could be.
Xavier does an exceptional job and really is a positive for the state and the city of New Orleans. Even though FEMA money was a big part of it, their campus is very up to date and extremely nice for an urban campus, black, white or purple. They as I mentioned before have a world renowned program that is the best in the state and definitely in the south. Have a student body that continually puts out graduating classes that any school regardless of color would be proud of. They may be an HBCU but unlike other HBCUs you can walk on their campus or even attend there as a student that is not African American and feel welcomed. Their is a culture that advocates excellence and learning, and even though I am white, as much as I would not want them to go for personal reasons, if my son or daughter came to me and said I want to go to Xavier and major in pharmacy, it would be hard to tell them no at this point in time.

Things will get interesting at Xavier in the next year. Dr. Francis, the longest serving university president in the nation, since 1968, is retiring.
Xavier LOOKS great, especially from the outside; both physically, and in its marketing. But they are one Congress away from closing. In January of 2006, XULa ran the Fall 2005 schedule until March, that way, they wouldn't have to forfeit all the Federal tuition funding, Pell Grants, etc. that keeps the doors open. Then in March, they ran an abbreviated/accelerated Spring semester with fewer students.
They've come back and quickly, new Chapel (of course nothing like what St. Katharine envisioned,) student convocation center. The other problem is that they get the initial funding to build all these very fine buildings, but then can't maintain them.
College of Pharmacy is really good, yet it's often mis-managed and over the last ten years has nearly lost its accreditation TWICE. The Dean of the CoP is usually a political choice as much as anything else. They've lost a couple top-notch, well-respected researchers, one to Tulane, due to internal politics.
My son considered going there, wanted to study pharm. but he doesn't have the organizational skills/regimented nature needed to study pharm. I used to see the students in the library drilling and drilling with gallon-sized ziploc bags full of index cards. It ain't easy.
Plus, even with the money they offered him and TOPS, no way I could afford it. I guess I should never have quit working there, he could have gone for free.

A seemingly well-informed and civil discussion.
It appears there may be a few posters here with animosity towards minority races.

South Carolina State is completely broke and the state keeps giving them bailouts to keep them open. It is plagued by corrupt administration and low graduation rates. It wouldn't surprise me if Congressman Clyburn is in on it. One of the trustees was recently convicted of more than 12 federal charges. The school needs to be shut down.
There are good HBCUs out there, but many of them are completely useless in 2014.
Yeah my mom is an alum from SCSU. They always find bad reasons to get themselves in the news.
How the hell do you not have a CPA on staff controlling the finances for a University?

I know that most HBCU's are trying hard to diversify but this movement should have come years ago.
It's not really new. When I was a senior in high school, I could have gotten a diversity scholly from some of the top HBCUs like Howard and Fisk. (I'm white).
I did consider Howard but ended up not applying.

Head Ball Coach University? Is this where coaches go to prepare to be head ball coaches like Steve Spurrier?
