I just got that Lodge skillet and I love it. But I cook a lot with it indoors as well, especially breakfast stuff.
I would tell you, if you had time, the best thing in the world to get him would be the antique cast iron cookware. I think Griswold and Wagner are brand names. For some reason, the metal used back then is no longer used today, and these old pots and skillets are the bomb.
But you don't have time, that's something you would have to research and most likely buy from specialty traders, as it's easy to get ripped off with fakes. I would love getting a cast iron pot that was used in the early 1900's or older.
P.S. - I would not get enamel, but that's just me. Lodge is simple and inexpensive. And part of the fun of them is seasoning them, which you do over time by cooking in them.

I have decided to go with the Lodge. I usually buy early, this year, I got caught shopping late.

As I have gotten older I care less about gifts and more about spending time with family.

Nah, super quiet. They also make similar models that sprays a mist in front of the airstream.

The greatest gift my kids give me is to spend the day with me, a simple I love you and the responsible way they live their lives. Dad's have most of what they need.

Perfect for the good ole Louisiana baw.

It isn't the metal it's the molding process. They would also grind down the cookware to make them thinner and smoother. Modern methods are more cost efficient for mass production, but will never be quite as nonstick.
But whatever I have a lodge, and it works fine. I also have a smaller old skillet that I use for cornbread that I inherited from my grandparents. Like you said the process of seasoning is part of the fun.
I have been wanting to go digging around antique stores and flee markets for a while to see if I can find some more genuine old cast iron, but I haven't made the time to do it thus far.

I'm not remotely a racist. With some exceptions, I'm generally not attracted to black men (nor are they attracted to me).
