My triggers are pork liver (boudin) and fajita or flank steak. Some people claim shellfish, yall mentioned beer and red meat, hasn't been a problem for me. Also I hear goat or other gamey meat (venison) are known triggers.

Passing along for info, I had a doctor put me on allopurinol, my dad had gout, yadda yadda, I thought I was screwed for life. First bout around late 30s to 40. Then I had another doc review my meds and said "You know Hydrochlorothiazide makes you more prone to gout?" So I am now on a different BP med (Losartan), might be something to look at as hydrochlorothiazide is a commonly prescribed BP med. I have not had a serious attack since i got off hydrochlorothiazide. Can eat Boudin again and fajitas! And beer with them both! Life is good!

Watch Colchicine as a med. It is a necessary evil if you are having a gout attack, but I wouldn't use that as a go to to bail you out, causes your body harm in other ways...

I've had it before, but it's been a while. Lose some weight, will help.

I’ve had gout flairs for 20 years. Started in my big toe Then it moved to my upper foot, then to my ankles.
I don’t know what took me so long to get on Allopurinol but it has changed my life.

I thought I would walk with a limp for the rest of my life due to the damage it inflicted. When I got on the medication, all pain was gone in a week.
Cheap and easy fix. Eat and drink what you want.

I’ve had chronic gout since 25. I used to keep it at bay with a healthy diet and exercise, but the pain and swelling increased in my 30s. I finally went to the doctor and was put on allopurinol.

I’ve had gout for so long that the allopurinol gave me flare ups. It’s been almost two years with the pills and finally getting better.

Dehydration and sedentary work weeks cause my issues.

I went from having a flair up every few months to not having had one in over 13 years with Allopurinol.

I can still ride my bike when I get flare ups and I do. The sweating and drinking a lot of water seems to help me. Basically flushing out the uric acid crystals, I guess.

I've heard if you're predisposed, you either get gout or kidney stones, but not both. I haven't been to the doctor yet, but I think I have gout in my heel. Hurts pretty bad when I first step on it after I've been sitting or laying down. Kind of goes away but feels like it's just moving to a part of the foot/heel that isn't contacting the ground.

Multiple days of beer, no exercise and bad food. I get it in the top of my foot where even a sheet from the bed on it is painful. Plenty of rest and hydration helps along with no beer. Switched to tequila and sodas helps too.

I used to never get gout but my dad and brother did. Several years ago, I started getting gout when over indulging alcohol. I now take allopurinol, but if I were to drink 12 beers, I'd feel some discomfort a few days later, but not the extreme pain I used to get.

My solution is that I've basically quit drinking, except for special occasions and then I limit myself to 3 drinks.

Now I smoke a metric ton of herb and no gout attacks at all.

ETA--I didn't think I'd get gout because I'm in very good physical condition for pushing 50. Still run 5k races and place well and I work outside daily.

Not necessarily. It's my understanding that fat people get gout attacks more frequently than skinny people but skinny people get them too. Apparently the key is if you are genetically predisposed to gout attacks you will get them if you trigger an attack with what you eat and drink. If you are not genetically predisposed you won't get them, fat or not.

I'm at the beach this week. Sipping a few beers on the beach this morning, but I switch to brown water or wine back in the condo in the evening. Those do not affect me for whatever reason

I had gout about 5 years ago. Ate a ton of boiled shrimp at the camp. Woke up in the middle of the night and my entire hand was swollen and felt like it was going to explode. Never had it again.

Is gout mostly a problem with larger people? It seems all of my overweight friends complain about it often.

No. I'm 5'11" and weigh 190 and i've had gout attacks since I was 30ish . Shell fish, beer and asparagus, are my main triggers. I went 6 years without a flare up until my wife and I decided we wanted hard wood floors in the den. My knees swelled up to where I couldn't stand up. Like others have said I couldn't stand for the sheet to touch them. I take allopurinol daily and a small glass of Tart cherry juice at night. Costco sells a Montmorency tart cherry that snack on at work.

Uric Acid build up causes Gout. Google what triggers elevated levels of Uric acid and eleminate that from your diet.

Food rich in purines cause uric acid to go up. A lot of foods have purines lurking where that are not likely suspected.

Although most vegetables are safe to eat on a low-purine diet, you may need to limit mushrooms, green peas, spinach, asparagus and cauliflower, depending on how they affect you personally.

Had one serious gout attack. Doc gave me Vioxx and it went away in a day.

I had been out drinking the night before and thought I had stubbed my toe and put an ice pack on it. Big mistake!!! Gout often hits the big toe because it is the coolest part of the body causing over saturated uric acid to crystalize there.
