August 15, 1995 sounds 100 percent accurate.

I’m pretty sure that if you are not old enough to buy then you are probably not old enough to drink. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of different ages for alcohol
In Louisiana, it's legal to drink under age 21 in these conditions:
quote:
--on private non alcohol-selling premises, with parental consent
--on private, non alcohol-selling premises, without parental consent
--for religious purposes
--for medical purposes
--on alcohol-selling premises with parental consent
But it's not legal for someone under 21 to buy it.
Many other states have exceptions to the minimum drinking age of 21 also. States that allow underage drinking

During the 90s when feds threatened to wit hold hwy funds unless the age was raised back up to 21. It was during the 70s that the state actually dropped it to 18 across the board from beer at 18 and hard liquor at 21.

Lol. Nah. It was 1995. This NY Times article references the Supreme Court overturning the 1995 law. They lowered it back to 18 for 3 months I believe, then reversed their own decision and brought it back to 21.
NY Times article
For those still not convinced, here is the actual statute from the state. Note that it was originally passed in 1995 (near the bottom it will show Acts 1995) before being amended and or revisited in 1996 due to the Supreme Court ruling.

So you can drink with your child in a bar if it is for religious purposes...I did not know that. Interesting.

Oops, those were supposed to be bullet points but it didn't copy right. I fixed it.
From the way it reads, I'm pretty sure your child can drink in a bar with you present at any time (not just for religious purposes). Some bars may argue with you though--I've never actually tried it.
I've been researching the laws in Louisiana recently because I have a kid who just turned 18 and this subject has come up in several discussions.

Your memory is deceiving you. I turned 18 in 1991 and was never affected by the raise. I turned 18 1 month before graduation and was able to buy all the booze before we left for Sr trip.
I turned 21 in 1994 so it was definitely not raised prior to that year. I was in a club every wknd buying drinks during those years so there's no way that you couldn't if you turned 18 in 85'. You weren't grandfathered bc everyone could buy & drink alcohol at 18.

In South Louisiana you couldn't buy it in stores but you could in a bar until 1996 or so. It was a strange loophole.
In 1991, I turned 18 one month before graduation & I bought all our booze at Albertsons before we left for Sr trip.

It is. I was legal for 6 days. Didn't matter much at the time because we were buying beer at 15 years old and we were able to still buy at mom and pop shops as well as some bars. That law wasn't enforced everywhere though.

You could no longer buy it in a store until you were 21. I know because I turned 18 in 1985 and could only buy it in a store for a few months. You could drink at a bar if you were 18. If I remember you needed to be with someone over 21.
