Not just cable TV, but more like when video games became popular, circa early 80's. Atari says "Hi."

Went to high school and college in the late 80s / early 90s. There were one or two fat kids we made fun of.

The tide seemed to turn with home video consoles, cable and pizza delivery.

Late 80s, 90s. When I was a kid in school in the 70s you maybe had 1 fat kid in a class if at all and people would say it was because of some kind of health problem, nothing to do with eating too much. Seems to correlate with the rise of processed foods, fructose corn syrup vs sugar etc.

I’ve never seen so many overweight kids

Very true. I’ve been trying some online dating recently and the ratio of fat to pretty girls is easily 5:1.

When did obesity really become an epidemic?
When mega food corporations paid off the "scientific" community to start pushing upside down nutrition standards, ie- Animal fats bad. Carbs good. Look at Americans now. Waddling walruses.

1980. Thank the wonderful govt for the food pyramid and pressuring food processors to remove fats from food which led to replacing natural fats with sugar to enhance flavor

Before there just wasn’t enough to hold your attention all day. And size portions became much larger. …late 80s , early 90s it kicked off
Yeah close to this. It's when the FDA and other gov agencies started allowing all these preservatives and other chemicals placed in your food for "looks and longevity." The dairy industry ramped up the cheese and calcium in your "milk" and started pushing for healthy bones, etc. It started also with the vast amount of advertising and the ridiculous concept that you are supposed to eat 3 times a day, which is completely untrue.

The food pyramid was updated to match these results pumping in these foods that have no soluble fiber like white rice and other starches which do not fill your stomach, it's all dead nutrition. Natural rice has soluble fiber which turns into a thick gel when digested that coats your stomach allowing your brain to signal you are full. All these starches are also processed and remove this fiber therefore you eat more. If you look at wild rice its black, and it contains the soluble fiber you need. All the white starches that are bleached do not have this.

In short you have a system and food that is manufactured to not make you full, with NO nutrition and nutrients in it and with "entertainment, TV, video games" among others are all keeping people in place. Kids don't go outside anymore and they continue to eat these foods therefore getting bigger and bigger. The cycle then continues. Until people realize your health is a trillion-dollar business and they are paid to keep you fat, sick, and unhealthy, the quicker things will change. All this body positive stuff is going to keep people bigger longer and with heavier weight becomes more health problems. It's all connected whether people believe it or not.

Late 90’s early 2000’s Seems about right based on my experience. We didn't have very many fat kids in high school.

I graduated HS in 09 and we had 8 kids out of 45 that were overweight. I look at the classes now and it’s closer to half the class is overweight

Today, we expect every meal to be a feast. At home, we pile our plates and restaurants would serve huge portions. Daily, we are eating more calories than we can burn, and we gain weight.

The popularity of cheap all you can buffets and supersize combos in the 80s-90s really conditioned people to this. It’s actually scaled back some now at least

I remember as a kid in late 90s there were golden corrals, catfish buffets, western sizzlin, pizza buffets, kfc and Popeyes buffets, shoneys, etc fricking everywhere. Every town of 8k people full of these. Wendy’s biggie size and other fast food places largest size portions were huge, twice the size a large size is now.

One component but not the main cause. The main cause was mainstream (aka government) nutritionists and doctors began pushing us away from healthy, fat, nutrient rich foods to "healthy" "low fat" foods full of carbs and sugar. Look up a guy name Ansel Keys.

It’s a combination of things.

Govt getting rid of fats in food and pushing carbs

Food stamps allowing for purchase of processed foods and not just staples and meat.

More sedentary lifestyles with tv, computers, more automation at work.

Less people smoke. Smoking inhibits appetite and relieves stress. Now many with stress/anxiety eat comfort food instead of a smoke break

The era of Fast Food Burger Combos and Sodas. There's your culprit, at least for me.

I cut off the Burgers, Sodas, and refined sugar. I lost 30 lbs in two months. I now snack on veggies (carrots). Working my juicer like there's no tomorrow. My goal: BMI Index = 22.

I walk a mile a day, and I drink lots of water. Weight loss is holding steady.

When a dual income became the norm for a family to afford a decent house. Taking mothers out of the home and into the workforce was a mistake that our society will never admit to.
