When they talk about going north they mean a trip to Canada
Wtf does this mean? If they never left the country, why would north mean another country?
And what else is north of us other than Canada? What does north mean to you? The moon?

But are you really living life?

I didn't leave the country until I was much older, excluding Cancun and Mexican border towns which don't really count IMO. A friend couldn't believe that I had never had a passport until she started giving me grief and a number of other people chimed in saying that they didn't have one. I think that's pretty common given the access that we have to major cities, beaches, mountains, and just about anything that you would want to do.
I've since been to Ireland, Peru, and Spain with a trip to Mexico City in a couple of weeks. I was kind of surprised how few people that I know who have considered visiting Mexico City given it's proximity and all of the food and culture that it has to explore.

Yea all the people that haven’t left the US don’t know what they’re missing. The passport stuff sucks, but there’s so many amazing things to see

So going to a different country doesn’t count as going to a different country?

Fiancée is 25 and had never left Louisiana or Texas her entire life. Growing up as a military brat and living all over that completely blew my mind.
Over the past 18 months we’ve visited 22 states and 3 countries. Looking forward to a lot more.

Actually, I'm going on my first international trip in about a month to Scotland.

Yes and no. You've traveled beyond our borders but going to a Sandal's resort and staying in a bubble until you fly home isn't really experiencing another country's culture.

That’s a separate discussion entirely.

In the last two years I’ve gone to four different countries (Iceland, Cuba, Bali, and England) and have two more scheduled within the next six months (Italy and Canada).
There are so many great places in the US to visit, and I do those trips too. But going to another country and experiencing a new culture and eating new foods is one of life’s greatest experiences IMO.

DC money is mostly non-politician, non tax payer funded. Huge lobbying firms, law firms, and even a substantial private equity presence.
If you think lobbying firms and law firms are non political and aren’t using tax payers dollars, you’re an idiot.
