its about social circles and business contacts. making sure your kids grow up in the right avenues of people. The parade is a fringe thing. Like i said, the social gatherings are the most important thing.

Most members who wish to ride do so in chaos. The club does not wish to open itself up to outside intervention and it can remain closed by not parading.

Is this actually the case? Comus members only or Momus members as well?

Right, but that ordinance was thrown out. So why not parade again

Do you really not think if they tried to roll again with an only white policy that it wouldn't turn into a shite storm?

There would be a media driven hell unleashed about this issue. You know, they parade on public streets and the police and shite are paid for with tax dollars so you can't have all of that stuff.

They love being super exclusive as they are without the parade.

Most of the members either don't want to parade cause they are old and boring, or ride in other Krewes now

In fairness, they used to ride Mardi Gras night (right?) and I imagine the general public is pretty well checked out by then these days.

It's not like the calendar is hurting for more parades so it's a win-win for all parties.

There was something very surreal about it as a Parade. Toward the end of their parading, it was really clear that they just DGAF at all, nor did 90% of the people out on the street at the time. Yet, they still did so and there was something really cool about seeing it pass in the drunken haze of Mardi Gras night.

I vaguely remember watching the last one from the Humming Bird Grill. It was awesome.

Not true, organizations have one purpose and that is to put a parade on the street - and party is part of it.

They tell you just that at the swearing in.

Oops, I was not supposed to reveal secrets. Keep that between us.

That is not true in new Orleans. Our three most renown social/private clubs simply have parades associated with them. The parades are not the central focus. You cannot dine at any of the clubs if you are not a member and it allows for privacy among the members for a myriad of different things.

I was just a wee lad but I too remember it as an otherworldly event. They sped by almost without regard to the few onlookers, yet there was something stately in their practically mute adherence to the tradition of parading.

And there are many other Carnival organizations in NOLA that do not parade, and never have.

That's what I loved about it also. The parade was always themed around something ancient or esoteric. They never seemed to care if the crowd understood, or even enjoyed the parade. Notice that Rex is the King of Carnival, yet he has to leave his ball to meet with Comus; almost like it is Comus who runs it all. I always loved the mystery of the whole thing. I think Mardi Gras lost something special when Comus stopped parading.

YA what an incredible description of The Comus parade for those of us who weren't around when it still rolled. It does seem like something is missing on the night of Fat Tuesday. The day is filled with such rich tradition a night cap with an on historic Krewe like Comus just seems fitting.
