Best of them all. Truest current embodiment of the original intent of the Carnival season.

Thought that was Momus that became the Knights of Chaos.

Literally invented the Mardi Gras parade in 1857 . Were tired of putting on an expensive free show for the people of New Orleans and leapt at the chance to not parade after being persecuted by their own city for essentially wanting to hang out with their friends. Do you really think there are any Asian black lgtb Wahabists green peace members or oompah loompahs who sincerely want to attend the Comus ball? It's really not very exciting unless it's your daughter or granddaughter being presented. Shameful the way they were treated after having done so much for the city.

Holy shite. I just read about how members of Comus assassinated Lincoln.

Some True Detective shite going on in these secret societies.

I've always found it fascinating how much importance some circles put on the whole ball/debutante thing. Blue blood fathers taking out a second mortgage just to pay for some sweet deb party for their daughters.

Your cousin is quite a few years older than you if that is the case. Aren't you in your mid 20s

Who's going to see the Krewe of Athena roll tonight for the first time ? It's an all african American women Krewe.

I believe Athena is the Godess of the double standard.

forgive my ignorance but is the pickwick affiliated with Proteus? I have a friend that is a member of both. Until I read your post, I've always assumed they were separate.

If people were really honest, they'd admit there are about 50% too many parades.

Actually, I don't think there are enough and I miss the parades being in various locations like during the 70's and 80's.

It was a convenient excuse.

That parade had been in decline for years.

It was more of a whimper of resignation than any kind of political statement.

I think I'm going to go with "They know the Yellow King" as the reason they stopped parading.

IDGAF if Comus or any of the other old line parades roll or not. DMT went about it the wrong way, thinking she could legislate with whom people could associate...but ultimately her point was that these racist organizations (and they ARE racist) were conducting business -- sometimes private, sometimes public -- at their luncheon clubs and minorities and non-old money whites, weren't getting a seat at the table. It's fricking ridiculous anyway, grown arse men in tights pretending to be royalty. The Zulu parade practically exists entirely as a satire on Comus/Rex/Proteus/Momus.

I know a few people associated with the Pickwick/Boston/Louisiana Clubs, and thankfully, many of the younger guys don't take that shite as seriously as some of the older guys, many of whom spend every waking second of every day thinking, nay dreaming, about the next Carnival. Like that Henry Schindler douchebag. That guy would kill himself if Mardi Gras ceased to exist.

If people understood and appreciated the real role politics and race had in the creation and history of New Orleans Mardi Gras, they might look at it a bit differently.

Not a member of any, know quite a few, but I think it is really cool the way it was. No, I would never have been allowed to join either, but enjoy the spectacle, and if you get to got to a ball or whatever enjoy it. Happy Mardi Gras!
