Because if it was right off the bat, more people would know it was fake.
Make it seem as if things are “going smoothly” and then introduce some chaos.
It’s not immediate viewership they were after. It’s the social media buzz they wanted tomorrow. Anything to keep the Oscars in the news cycle.
That way next year, more people will tune in just to “see what happens”

They got some publicity sizzle during the last 45 minutes, but with the way the news cycle moves, by April 1st, no one will be talking about it anymore.
