If you're changing your tune that Smith unilaterally planned this in the moment out of some weird desire to get attention, I can buy that.
I'm not too close to buying that this was a production feature, though. That idea is too illogical.

it's more weird that you ignore this "stunt" does nothing
Simpletons believe fake shite is real, they spread the gospel on social media so more people will think its real then you have a mob of dumb people knighting for some dumbass actor.
The stunt worked perfectly, you are a prime example. Simple people fooled by shitty drama. These dumasses pass each other around like a joint, and you believe he was defending her honor..

Have you ever heard "any publicity is good publicity?"
It's been said for literal ages.
That doesn't mean they orchestrated a bitch slap.
If they really wanted to be edgy for the sake of publicity, they could've just asked Ricky Gervais to host. Eyeballs would've been watching from the beginning of the broadcast.

No one's talking about the amazing "King Richard" performance and Oscar for Will Smith's legacy.
shite.
Outside of CODA, the media would’ve been all about Will Smith winning his first Oscar for being a “strong black father” if this stunt doesn’t happen. All over it.

Stop pushing conspiracies.

You would be wrong, again. I never said there was an overarching conspiracy. I said it was a publicity stunt.

While I wouldn't be surprised if it was some kind of publicity stunt, this is exactly where I'm at. Someone answering these questions. If they could be answered, it would make me rethink things.
It's simple
It gave a couple struggling with affairs and infidelity a moment of solidarity. I'd argue their public recent struggles could even be the reason for this entire stunt.
Hell, the Oscars might have not even known for that matter. It could be a bit of both, looney Jada/Will and themselves staging it, not the Academy.
The only thing I'm sure of, is that it was fake. It was WWE level bad.

And 40+ pages in, NO ONE has directly addressed these questions. They've just clung to generic "Hollywood does all kinda crazy for publicity". But no one will address the above questions with a reasonable response.
I've done it twice now. Public marriage in trouble. White Knight Will comes to the rescue
FFS the movie they handed him an Oscar for he made the speech about Richard "living to protect women"
It's so fricking obvious the people believing it scare me, because they are otherwise logical people for the most part.

And Will Smith must have one hell of a commitment to this bit to not have had his publicist at least drop a hint that it was staged, since he's eating his fair share of shite in the aftermath this morning.

Which actor is being knighted? The one that would seem to need it most is getting torched in the court of public opinion. That's a win?
Or are you suggesting that Rock needed knighting so he set this all up to look like a victim who played it cool under pressure?

Bingo. They've been dragged through shite. He's not defending honor, he's acting.
This was simply for show to put off the negative publicity they receive as a couple.

And out of all the ways they could have chosen to do this, since it was all fake after all, they chose this one where Will looks like a total buffoon on the night he wins an Oscar?

The overwhelming response on social media is that Will slaps like a bitch, only defended his wife when she gave him the stank eye, and got butthurt over a joke. How does that help him at all

Conspiracy theorists aren't bothered with logic

All that training for Ali and the best he could do was an open hand slap? Turrible.

So the theory is that Will Smith went rogue with a staged bit at the Oscars and somehow convinced Chris Rock to play along?

I think it had more to do with him being publicly humiliated for the past year than the actual joke. Everybody has a breaking point.

OK, so MAYBE you've answered 1 of the questions. (Although it's really, again, just hollywood does hollywood things).
But you didn't address the other questions.

They aren't dying on the vine. Hollywood just had one of it's biggest opening movies of all time in No Way Home, in 2021.
And go walk up to a random person on the street and ask them to name you 3 more movies that came out last year.
There's never been another time in the past 75 years where basically everyone you approached wouldn't be able to easily do that, and list many more.
