If you were at the Academy Awards and it was a comedian on stage doing it, most likely nothing. You'd sit there.

The threat of a public arse kicking used to keep people from mouthing off to each other for centuries.
It used to be pretty common knowledge that talking shite about a man's wife warrants a physical reaction. I have no problem with it and the world would be a better place if it was done more frequently.

Toxic masculinity if they was white

I generally support comedians rights to be comedians. The question is whether this was comedy. Thats in the eye of the beholder.
If rock knew about her medical issue then it’s not comedy imo. If he didn’t know then I think he should issue an apology.
As for Will smith, I have no problem with the way he handled it. That doesn’t mean he has a right to do it but he chose to take the chance that he could get sued. He has enough Money so maybe it didn’t really matter to him if he got sued.

It would get handled backstage or at the after party.

Which is the proper place for it.

I am still not entirely convinced that was not a worked slap.

Clearly you don't, because you just described the major problem comedians face today, which is that every single person thinks their own personal issues warrant special privileges and are therefore exempt from being made fun of.
My guess is that Will smith laughed his arse off at jokes made at the expanse of others last night, and likely at every other event he's ever been at. Same goes for most whiny bitches who go to see comedy shows. Then...bam, the comedian makes a joke that for them suddenly hits home, and NOW he's gone too far!!!!
A few years ago, Tom Segura made a fairly short joke about Cajuns in standup special. It was pretty funny, but naturally people around here lost their shite about it, despite having likely laughed at everything else he'd said in the special. This happens over and over, with every comedian and all audiences.

Chris Rock Comedy Tour Sees Surge in Ticket Sales After Will Smith Slap
Man I wonder why Chris Rock might be in on this little skit????

Every time I see the video, especially the slow motion video, it’s obvious it’s a fake.
Will Smith keeps looking down as he walks up so he doesn’t laugh. In the instant after the slap (as Smith is turning back around) both Rock and Smith have a smile on their face.
What more info is needed?
You're entitled to your opinion. I just think it's not very smart if you're so engrained in your position, that you are completely unwilling to change your mind no matter what new information you are presented with.

Context matters. If this is some random guy at the bar, I agree.
If you're at a comedy show front row, and the comedian let's off a joke about her. Are you going to go on stage to try and fight him?

This wasn't exactly JYD going after Koko B. Ware.

Is the argument that the entire Academy is in on the scam here?

I already said, if they revoke the trophy, it's a shoot. If they slap him on the wrist it was a work

This means absolutely nothing. The Oscars has all of social media talking about them after several dreadful years of ratings. How many “no one even watched the Oscars” tweets have you seen today?
Mission accomplished.
