if this was unplanned, and this act of violence embarrassed the Academy, and diminished the black community, and ruined the reputations of two black performers---and therefore, they didn't want anyone to see it YOU WOULDN'T HAVE SEEN IT. They would have cut away immediately, made excuses, "technical difficulties," and YOU WOULDN'T HAVE SEEN IT. Period.

You're just proving him right. If they cut the cameras we would all still have found out. You really think Chris Rock is going to get slapped by Will Smith in front of all of Hollywood and nobody's going to find out about it because of a tape delay? Everyone would have noticed the cut and tried to figure out what happened and then the story would get out, and they'd have to explain why they felt they had to cut over a slap.

I got the context clues, I'm just trying to figure out where this came from and why we needed new words for the ones that worked.

Those "new" words have probably been around longer than you have.

Kayfabe is the term used in wrestling meaning the appearance of things being real but they're really fake. These are all well established terms used in the wrestling community.

Yup...that would be why I have ABSOLUTELY NO frickING CLUE what any of that was from.

What difference does that even make? For someone who didn’t watch the show it has no relevance whether he was the main host or not

did you read his post?

You actually prove my point. He's already worth $60MM, so why did he take the job hosting the Oscars?

Moar money. Because enough is never enough and one can never be too rich...or something like that.

Jimmy Kimmel got $15k to Host the Oscars by himself, this year there were three female hosts and one of them said publicly she would LOSE money hosting this year.

How much do you think Rock got paid to introduce one Category and Announce the Winner? the answer is ZERO

Never watched wrestling...even when it was cool back in the 80s when I was a kid. Never my thing.

There still hasn't been any good reason posited as to why Will Smith, Chris Rock, or the Academy would agree to this "publicity stunt" if it truly were one.

The Oscar's went through a huge "the Oscar's are too white" movement and boycott a couple years ago, why would they agree to two black men making a scene for ratings out of all the other possibilities? This easily could've been two white people if it were staged, why Will Smith and Chris Rock?

What about the fact that Smith and Rock have openly disliked eachother for years now? Why would they agree to corroborate on this publicity stunt that makes them BOTH look bad? What did they possibly have to gain? They both have plenty of money and fame, Smith was literally accepting the greatest award of his lifetime shortly later.

The "it's fake!" crowd never actually addresses these points

I see what you're saying. But the point I'm trying to make, in the context of planned vs unplanned, is that if it was unplanned, then it would have not been shown, because physical assault is not a good look for anybody involved.

I keep going back to needing anyone who thinks this was staged to provide a solid reason for why all parties involved did it.

Will Smith looks like an a-hole, despite some knighting for him.

Jada Smith is getting fricking clowned for sleeping around and being bald.

Chris Rock is getting clowned for standing there and getting bitch slapped by a known cuckhold.

The Oscars are getting clowned for allowing it to happen and not doing anything and then handing him an award.

The Smiths and Rock do not care about ratings at The Oscars, so that dog doesn't hunt. None of those three need either the money or the attention. And if it was fake, why something which ended up making them all look terrible? Keep in mind, Chris Rock it a top 10 all time standup...surely he could have helped come up with a funnier gag that would have caught everyone's attention and not been so horrendous for all of them?

Who gains here specifically?

1. Will Smith just happened to be sitting in the front so that was perfect position to pull it off.
2. When he approached Rock's hands were behind his back. When anyone gets in your personal space instinct puts you on guard.
3. He rolled with the slap. When people get slapped there is some resistance especially with his wide foot stance.
4. Look at Smith's left hand. He's using it to brace and control himself. A real slap would have had a follow through.
5. There was no fight back reaction after the slap. There is either that or a loss of balance.
6. No anger in Smith's eyes after the slap. Almost a smirk.
7. The Oscar's ratings have been on a steady decline.

Fake or real doesn't really matter. The argument that the Academy would never go along with something like that being planned doesn't hold as much weight as most believe.

They cut the profanity part. They could have just as easily cut the slap. Someone, either the academy or the producers were okay showing the slap. The tape delay made it simple to not show any of it. Someone made the call to let it be seen.

Wish there were some other angles. Would like to see Smith's emotions change from when he was laughing. I guess something was said to him by her or someone around him and he snapped.

Oh this is just beautiful:

Will Smith may be asked to hand back his #Oscar  due to breaking The Academy’s code of conduct, sources tell @nypost.

Just gold. Excuse me, how many Oscars does Harvey Weinstein have?… You don’t say?… Well he was good at his job if not an outright monster… So ummm everyone, Harvey Weinstein has 81 Oscar wins.

So serially raping the whole town: Not Against the Academy’s Code of Conduct
Slapping a comedian for making a joke about your wife: Against the Academy’s Code of Conduct

I guess this is why all the celebrities also let Harvey’s wife design all their dresses and tuxes.
