You're misunderstanding the meaning of lost in this instance. Gertrude Stein first used this term, Hemingway made it popular in the Sun Also Rises.

Essentially, lost did not mean useless or feckless. It meant that the world had changed so drastically that the young men and women that came of age in the during and shortly after WWI didn't know their place and tended to wander around in a state of disillusionment.

Modern warfare had destroyed any sense of nobility and the aristocracy. The world was remade -- especially Europe. MILLIONS died for a war that accomplished NOTHING.

Everything changed and nothing was as it was. The younger generation had no way to relate to the older. Similar to how things are now.

It's a fair comparison.

Alternatively, the lost generation was also used to describe all the young people that died in a senseless war...

Sound familiar yet?

It's more a term to indicate they weren't recognized for their contributions to society. It's not that they didn't, I just bet that 80% of America can't tell you what their contributions were. And that's why they're the Lost Generation. I'm descended from 3 of them (dad's father was part of the Greatest and born in 23), so I respect them, but that doesn't change that most people can't name many of them that have contributed to society at large.

Ok, we're thinking of two different generations. I thought that the Lost and Silent Generations were the same. I'm thinking of the Silent Generation, and you're rightfully thinking of the Lost Generation. Sorry about that mix up

Silent Generation was between 1920 and 1940.

I don't think we can even begin to understand the exponential tech that the millennial will have access to in 20-30 years. They may have cures for diseases that we sink millions/billions of dollars to fight. Healthcare costs will hopefully decrease as biotech and tech in general get more advanced and/or accessible. Energy costs will likely decrease as people learn to efficiently harness alternative forms of energy and fossil fuels. The millennial generation may initiate an era of world peace if they can spread information and access to basic needs more efficiently and affordably. The millennials could be another great generation if the can avoid obvious problems.

And there are problems:
1 )accumulating debt with a growing desire to take more from the government.
2) resistance to the basic principles that made the US great, namely freedom without PC police (freedom of, not from), fiscal conservatism and a minimally invasive government
3) an improper balance of immigration without assimilation and security measures
4) A desire to reject objective morality and reject any attempt to define a right and wrong in an attempt to be accepting of all people... even if what that person is doing is obviously sick or twisted.
