The biggest worry I have for the US moving forward is whether we will evolve our educational models fast enough to adapt to the wave of technology.

Technology will replace unskilled work.

Technology will create opportunities in skilled labor.

If we do not train a populace to work in these skilled/semi-skilled "new" roles enabled by technology, then we will have a large portion of society that is left behind.

I think that is his biggest fault in these discussions. He is unable to separate his personal experience (and if they were bad, I truly empathize) from the generation as a whole. There are millennials who are doing very well, but that doesn't mean the generation as a whole isn't in a bad position.

I know in my industry, I see a lot of dinosaurs who did not keep up with the times. It's a bummer, but an accountant that doesn't know how to use computers is just not a viable option anymore.

How come the boomers at my job get a pension and I have a 401k?

Generations before them made it on low credit rates. They don't have that luxury. The other problem is that they are raised on internet and reality TV. Generations before them had to compete against the USSR and Communism. There's a whole bunch of other reasons, but the scary part is what will happen next. They could get pissed, buckle down, and pull this country out the crapper. Or, since they are a spoiled generation, demand the government do it for them.

Same thing I always do in these. Poke the millennials with a stick by pointing out how they look just like Boomers to us Gen Xer's.

I'm loving my 401K. I've got over 20 years into it and it's grown to a point where I should have a very comfortable retirement.

We are too busy paying off massive amounts of student loan debt and before you give me that work a part time job to pay for school shite. Go look at the average cost a four year degree and tell me how the hell could you even pay for books with the jobs that the generations before us deemed we are qualified for.

Darth ruins every generational discussion thread; it never fails. You'd think he ascended to be a fortune 10 CEO after being raised in the Magnolia Projects during a depression by the way he shits on other people and entirely dismisses circumstances beyond anyone's control.

I know what you mean, but this has been a pretty decent generational discussion thread in spite of him.

Of all the gripes your generation has, to me this is the most legit. You grew up in a time and age where you were told from early childhood that you've got to go to college and you've got to get a degree to live a good life. But what you were never told was that if you take a product and flood the market with it, then that product will lose it's value. This is true of all products, including a college degree. In my day having a college degree gave you a leg up on everyone else Which for the sake of full disclosure, I've never attended a single day of college in my life. But now, every Tom, Dick, & Harry has a degree. This means your degree does not carry the same weight it did years ago.

Another thing your generation was never told is there's plenty of great careers where no degree is needed. You can go to a trade school (or the military) and learn a skilled trade and make great money or even own your own business. Trades like plumber, electrician, welder, mechanic, or machinist can lead to six figure incomes. But most of your generation were never informed of this. Instead y'all were taught from an early age that to work with your hands in one of these fields was "beneath" you. Now, while there's a ton of people your age with a degree and nothing to show for it other than a job busting tables, there's a ton of well paying skilled trade jobs out there that employers are begging people to come fill and they're not having much luck finding anyone.

When it comes to college and how having a degree was the sure path to a good life, y'all were lied to in a big way.

Ih I'm sorry. I thought this was an actual discussion where people had different views and opinions. Instead y'all are just wanting to have a pity party circle jerk. Ok, gotcha. Yall carry on where one whines and bitches and everyone else just nods their head in agreement.

The lie was that you could get any college degree. If someone majors in computer science, they will never have a challenge finding a job assuming they learned something in college.

this is very true. Also, becoming a tech/mechanic in a lot of areas is not just muscle anymore. Construction companies will always find people that can change filters but finding someone that can work on cranes or is sober enough to operate a crane is becoming harder and harder.

Can you do some sort of apprenticeship to learn how to operate a crane? Or, would someone have to go back to school to learn?
