Look at the satellite. It's not going to get to 39 degrees today. The clouds aren't going anywhere. In fact, they're advancing further north instead of eastward. We're going to be cloudy all day long and we'll be lucky to get above freezing.
Edit: just found this from the NWS. Apparently my thinking is confirmed.

There are layers/patches of ice on non elevated roads that may melt, but for bridges and etc it's going to still be nasty
I was just commenting on someone that assumed wind chill didn't matter

Wind chill can indeed speed up the process of frozen precipitation on roads by lowering the surface temp. Roads don't become immediately frozen just because the temp drops below freezing, the road has to indeed undergo a tempature change. Maybe that's what he meant; and wind chill can make any surface or object cool faster
I don't really wanna get in a pissing match but

Are the road closures in the OP up to date?
Posted on 1/29/14 at 10:14 am to Hat Tricks
Ok, now look up how long it takes ice to thaw at 40 degrees sustained

I'm not arguing that things will thaw today. Only that wind chill doesn't have anything to do with it not thawing.

It certainly should be.

US90 between Houma and Raceland is now open. Only the west (LA 1) bridge over the Intracostal in Larose and the Leeville to Fourchon elevated road remain closed.
There is also a link to the statewide road closures here...

took Vets all the way to Fleur de Lis, went underneath interstate and came up alongside the cemetaries and into mid-City
Thanks for the info earlier this morning. I took this route and crossed Metairie Road and ended up crossing the interstate at the Airline/Tulane overpass to get Downtown.

Oh I was just posting to the last person in the thread. I didn't even read the post.
I mainly want to know if the roads will thaw enough for school to be back on tomorrow. I'm getting stir crazy!

Wind chill has nothing to do with the moisture remaining frozen or not.
HA... OK.....If you think it will melt THAT much you are crazy......... The sun isn't even out yet... It will be just as bad tomorrow morning... I would be VERY surprised if the I-10 bridge is open by tomorrow....

I never said it will melt peej. Only that wind chill isn't a factor in that.

Alot depends on the thickness of the ice, ground temps. . We aren't dealing with ice that is very thick here. Sublimation also comes into effect.

I suspect we'll have a late start tomorrow, probably open up around 10. I hope I'm wrong, I've got a morning classes I don't want to miss three days in a row.
