I have a friend who’s been doing standup for several years now, but I’ve only seen his act 1 time. My biggest reason for not going isn’t that his set isn’t funny, he’s actually quite hilarious and always has been. I don’t go because unlike his fans, I was there in the moments that later led to the genesis of his jokes. In some instances I’m either an unnamed part of the joke or I know who he’s talking about. It’s hard to separate myself from it and just be an audience member

You have drastically overthought this scenario.

Open Mic amateur stuff is usually 3 minutes, 5 minutes tops. It's not an hour long HBO special. Show up have some drinks and enjoy yourself. Make sure to tip your waitress and bartender.

I have several times. And I’ve enjoyed it.

Ask the intermediary friend if the guy sucks.

I did. He was actually funny as frick and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Afterwards he asked me what I thought and if he should change any jokes up. Made me feel all warm and funny as if I'm funny as frick.
