Don’t they basically leave their cars idling all winter because if they turn them off they likely won’t restart?

Lots of coal, gold, and diamond mining there plus it’s a port city.

I imagine the money is good by Russian standards. The city has never had population decline in over 100 years

Down a Google earth rabbit hole with this place. Holy shite, talk about isolated! From what I can tell, the closest “major” city is more than 600 miles away but get this, it’s connected by a dirt road! This place is out there. Railway in and out. These people don’t move out.

I wish the US had good relations with Russia because I’d love to visit places like this. I like random shite like this to hell with some over crowded tourist trap, I want to see the extreme parts of the world

Absolutely.

I would love to visit a place like this. Or the Middle East. Or anywhere in Africa. (Note: on my own dime, I know uncle same will send me to all these places for free!)

A lot of the settlers didn't choose it. Various governments chose for them. The Tsar's Imperial government used it as a place to ship criminals and dissidents. And then Stalin's gulag system had a lot of camps in the area. They were pretty much the worst camps in the system because of the winters. I don't think anybody knows what the survival rate was.
