The state fair was on a huge corner lot that became a mall. The mall has run it's course and is dying.

School lunches were .25 in EBR as well.

The news was news. There was no room for speculating, opining, pontificating, and just mindlessly talking to fill air time. Just the facts, ma'am.

Deposits on bottles.

Respecting authority figures.

Milkmen.

Keeping handicaps hidden in their schools and homes so the rest of us didn't see them.

Hell, the gym at Mamou High still doesn't have A/C.

LOL!! Not sure whether to laugh or cry about that one.

It's the only gym in the parish that is not air conditioned. Seems a bit unfair to me.

ETA: My graduating class (1978) was the last class to use the gym for graduation ceremonies. Every year after, they've had graduation at local churches or other halls with A/C.

I have an old pencil that says "LA Schools" on it. Is that one of the state-issued pencils you mentioned in your OP?

My mom told me she remembers when she was a kid that the city of Gretna had 2 pools. One for whites, and the other one was referred to as the "n***** pool".

And she's only in her 50's so it really wasn't that long ago.

So that's something different. If you're in your 50's or older you remember the different pools.

They were a kind of medium to light blue and said LA schools.

Before it was there it was at the old "Downtown" airport which is now Independence park.

Going on the old highway to Pensacola Beach in the old mans 1966 Lincoln Continental with the suicide doors-one of the kids laying across the rear dash, hit the Florida line and the old man would stop and open a cooler in the trunk and get a Jax beer, pull the tab and give to my sister who made necklaces out of his beer tabs (she could have opened a beer tab jewelry store) fire up a Pall Mall hit the gas and say "roll the god damn window up son. You're letting all the smoke out."

They may have had yellow as well since you have one. I remember seeing a big box of the blue ones in the supply cabinet and thinking it would last a whole grade forever.

I remember the airport but don't remember the fair being there. I do remember seeing a lot of airplanes taking off and landing there. They made the big hangar a fire dept. substation.

How's the John Parker forced integration working out for blacks or whites?

Say it with me. It was a bad idea. It was a bad idea....
