It looked like the legs that some platforms are built on - but I knew this was on pontoons and therefor not the case.

Very likely. They happen pretty often in forest fires too, all you need is rapidly ascending air. Fire is a good way to get air to rise.

I dont know Fred that looks way too long to be a crane boom. Looks like the flare boom to me.

That is a crane boom. It is the port side crane that was still in the rack. If you look at earlier pictures you can see the starboard crane was actually in use at the time of the explosion because it is out of the rack.

Actual water depth for the rig at location was 4,999 ft.

Guestimated between 500 and 700 million. To build it, I'm sure up to a year. I'm not too familiar with the fabrication side, though.
